OK, I was not expecting that but this is fine I think. I was hoping for Beshear, but this also isn't any of the people who would have made me ... concerned. Walz's most famous recent moment was when he described JDV as "weird" in a recent interview being one of the first to tap into the rich vein of pent up frustration with the sheer settling nature of republicans as of late.

The only "downside" is that he looks older. It would have been cool to have a "young looking" ticket. But this is mostly cosmetic nonsense and some people might have found two young looking people a little uncomfortable. Isn't it interesting how Harris can seem both young AND old? Secret superpower that.

@futurebird I liked Beshear also. The VP job has some unique needs that Walz might fit better than the others. I think Beshear and Shapiro probably are better candidates for president than for VP.

@futurebird Even though he doesn't call himself a progressive, he's passed progressive policies in MN. It's as close to a progressive in the white house as I've seen in my almost 60 years. Shapiro would've had baggage that could've turned away young voters and we need them 😊

@futurebird I’d never heard of him before he spoke on the #WhiteDudesForHarris call, and boy did he blow me out of the water. I came away super duper impressed - he seemed genuine, warm and fired up about many issues that I also happen to care about (women’s rights, LGBTQAI+ rights, support for labour etc.).

@futurebird I like that he's lived overseas, teaching English in China -- I lived in South Korea for several years when I was younger (military brat) and as a white person it's important to know what it feels like to look around and see NO ONE who looks like you.

@futurebird Interesting observation - you're right Harris looks (and sounds) young in the sense of being energetic and progressive and looking into the future, and old in the sense of being experienced and pragmatic. This is really a secret superpower. I do hope she wins (but I think the fight is not over and I've seen here in the UK with Brexit how opinion polls and analysts' expectations can be totally wrong).

@anubis2814 This is, frankly, MUCH BETTER than the Obama/Biden feel. Because Biden was one of those Democrats that went all "tough on crime" and had many ugly moments abandoning progressive values. Anita Hill. Say no more. We put up with him and I'm so happy that we don't have to anymore. (And to Biden's credit he grew and changed with time. He showed he could listen. I won't totally hate on him because of that. It's a rare quality.)Walz is a proper dem.

@futurebird As a Minnesotan, I have some frustrations with Walz, but I think he's the right pick for this moment. One big thing he has going for him is that he can be pretty safely replaced; we have a perfectly good lieutenant gov and aren't likely to flip at the end of the term. Unless I'm misunderstanding, plucking Beshear out of KY would have cost the Dems a governorship.

@futurebird I don't know anything about Walz but when I saw the pic my first reaction also was "I thought she'd pick somebody younger".But then it's an interesting idea that the "boss" is younger than her "number 2", this reverses the traditional expectations much more than if she had picked some young guy.

The more I read about him the more I like him. As a governor of a big state he has had to learn how to speak to people from big cities AND small towns. He's been around for a good bit of time so if he had baggage it'd likely be out in the open by now. And he seems very reasonable and grounded in interviews. For those who can only imagine a president as a certain type of person he ticks that box. (Which ought not matter much, but I think it still does)
