To those who claimed #Crowdstrike disaster is 100% a proprietary software problem: Debian shipped a security update to Bind9, only to update it two days later to fix a regression caused by the previous one.https://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2024/msg00145.htmlhttps://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2024/msg00146.htmlI'm not shitting on Debian (I'm a happy user for almost two decades now). Also, this is nowhere as fatal as Crowdstrike problem was. And of course it's far easier to roll back an update to a Debian package than an opaque binary blob delivered via bespoke update channel. However, this shows that nobody—not even our beloved FOSS—is safe from shipping a faulty update that breaks something.

@minoru Debian?Haha, a better example would be KDE neon. Just all of it. Half a year or so ago they released a distro upgrade that just... DESTROYED current installs, for almost everyone, including my own. Desktops dint boot, programs stopped working, gui didnt load, no sound, no 3d drivers, it was different for everyone, but it was completely and totally borked for most requiring a reinstall. If I remember correctly I didnt even have window borders anymore! The whole subreddit was full of

@UkeBLCatboy @minoru debian is a perfect example, especially after that OpenSSL fiasco 16 years ago.

@minoru desperate kde neon users with broken installs, and it was annoying to see some people respond with "but they're volunteers and its free". Or even worse "but the site says its a demo for KDE not a regular distro" (whatever the fuck that meant). Fact is, site encouraged the whole planet to install it on their goddamn pc's, so then also make sure it works... ffs.If a distro upgrade just *destroys everything* for almost everyone, how can it not be tested?Of course there are only what?

@minoru a 100.000 users worldwide? Most are on kubuntu which is usually fine or other distros, but still, THAT level of meltdown shitshow is just not acceptable. And I wish "we do it for free!" would not be such a common answer. The food bank also gives away food for free, but if they killed 8 people with botulism because they forgot to freeze their meat, no-one, NO-ONE, including themselves, would say "its fine! they're volunteers UwU!". For God's sake.Okay, rant over. But you're right XD
