A quick retrospective of the #TTRPG sessions I played at #GenCon 2024, a thread.1. I opened the con with a game of Dungeon Crawl Classics #dccrpg run by my dear friend @brendanlasalle . An action packed, madcap, gonzo psychedelic time-travel romp ensued, complete with betrayals, incredible crits, and putting the stomp on our own Patron! You know the adventure is good when blowing up Godzilla is only the halfway point!

2. Two-hour demo of #Dragonbane . Our scheduled GM was absent, but Free League provided a stand-in. Instead of the scenario I signed up for, he ran the first dungeon from the core set -- which I have read and run for others. I have no beef against him - it was kind of the company to run a game rather than cancel - but it made it more difficult to enjoy. Especially since we skipped a lot of the stuff that makes the system unique in order to have a couple quick fights.

3. A late-night Monster of the Week game. I own this book, but it was my first time playing in any form. We tracked a murderous skinwalker through small-town Colorado and got out with our own hides intact. Loads of fun, even in comparison to more 'modern' PbtA systems. It helped that we had a good GM and an enthusiastic group.

4. Started Friday morning with a two-hour demo of Alien RPG. This is a good game, but don't buy it - because the Company just announced a second edition is coming. This was another good session that could have been great if it had been a full 4-hr game instead of 2 hours. We had to quit just after the first xenomorph showed up, and before the crew really went to pieces... you know, all the fun stuff.

5. For the Queen is maybe not a TTRPG in the strictest sense - you draw cards and make a story based around the rather uncomfortable questions they ask you. Played with daring strangers, it was a delight and I hope to pick up a box. Great to fill an extra hour if you have time, not a replacement for a full roleplaying game.

6. Then I returned to my glorious stadium to take part in #XCRAWL, where we conquered the Rome Invitational -- not part of the Goodman tournament, but a one-off by another GM who was a great fellow. XCRAWL is a party experience in every sense of the word, much hooting and hollering was had as we contended with skiing trolls, angry sea monsters, and a lava giant!

7. I finished up Friday with a fun session of #AvatarLegends , where we raided a Fire Nation city during the Hundred Year War to steal plans for a city-killing machine -- oh, and rescue my character's ex-girlfriend. Lots of collateral damage and teen romance hijinks, and even a happy ending.I've played this three years running at the con because my home group isn't into PbtA or Avatar. I might need to find something else to pursue; more thoughts on that later.

8. Saturday morning I got a full, four-hour session of #Dragonbane and it was a lot more fun, with a really engaged group. We still skipped the gritty wilderness travel rules in favor of some dungeoneering, but all in all the scenario was fun and I think I like the system enough to try running it for some of my grognards back home.

9 and 10. I finished Saturday with two sessions back-to-back of #UrbanShadows In retrospect, this was a mistake. Both groups had dedicated and fast-thinking GMs and groups who were excited to be there -- but the game is the most complex character/world setup of any PbtA I've seen.

This has been an issue the last several years as I've played Magpie Games events -- especially Avatar and Urban Legends.Teaching the game rules plus full character creation takes so much time that we barely got into either scenario.I played a werewolf who never had a chance to shapechange and kick ass... and a vampire hunter who never saw a vampire or pulled out a weapon.Did I have fun? Yeah I guess, but I've done enough character creation now. Maybe I'll skip next year.
