*talking about other religions besides Christianity*Mom: It's fine when they don't push their religion on other people.me: Uh...you sent me to a Christian school. Mom: That's not the same thing. Oh yeah. Sending me to a school in which lessons literally condemned you for being a working mother, decried feminism as a great evil, and said that homosexuality is a learned behavior which deserves eternal torment. Totally not the same thing as Islamic fundamentalists forcing their beliefs on people. I love you, Mom, but quit gaslighting me. Thanks. #gaslighting #cognitivedissonance #toxicchristiantiy #exchristian #faithschools

@ladychelseaofthevoid @toiletpaper I don't know. I get that, but I think if parents don't have the choice of what their kids should learn, then who should? I don't want it to be the state.

@Hyolobrika @toiletpaper The Christian school was educationally negligent and was not accredited. Many students who graduate from Christian schools have to take an equivalency test like a GED to apply to college. I was lucky to go to a public school for my high school years. Yes, school choice is ultimately a parent's choice, but faith schools are widely unregulated meaning that any abuse gets swept under the rug. Thats not to say that doesnt happen in public schools, but its more often happening in faith and charter schools.

@ladychelseaofthevoid @toiletpaper In what way was it negligent?

@ladychelseaofthevoid @Hyolobrika I agree about faith based schools to a large extent. Yet governments aren't above mandating ideological indoctrination of children either. A large part of the western world's prepubescent children wanting to medically/surgically neuter/spay themselves now and having state legislative backing for it would be an example (one of many). It far outstrips the 1/1000 people with genuine biological intersex conditions, many of whom live and pass for the gender they were assigned at birth without being any the wiser short of a medical exam. Then there's home schooling, which would be my preference personally and can produce good results, but is by no means a guarantee, or necessarily consistent. In this kind of situation it seem appropriate for higher educational institutions to require entrance exams of some kind as a rule to ensure prospective students have the groundwork in place to not waste their time and money. No different from employers requiring an interview process before hiring. Not that higher education is immune to ideology either, but hey, people don't have to do any of that per se. It's all fairly voluntary depending on choice of career path in later life. Some of the most successful folks in business have had little to no formal education, and were arguably happier and ultimately more creative and open minded as a result. If people want to learn, lack of formal education isn't a barrier, especially while libraries and things like apprenticeships etc still exist, to say nothing of the internet.

@Hyolobrika @toiletpaper the world history lessons were "Biblical history" and the science courses were mainly anti-evolution propaganda. the entire curriculum depended on rote memorization and actively discouraged critical thinking

@toiletpaper @Hyolobrika yeah, I do agree certain political parties are trying to undermine public school education. I went to high school during the Obama administration and I was still fairly brainwashed and didnt understand politics that well. i cant imagine what public schools are like now in this powder keg of an election year. various states are trying to force the Bible into the classroom and not as merely a historical document, but as a textbook.

@ladychelseaofthevoid @toiletpaper I actually believe parents should be allowed to teach their kids that. The state should not be the arbiter of truth.>the entire curriculum depended on rote memorization and actively discouraged critical thinkingAren't most schools like that? I don't remember being taught critical thinking in my school.

@Hyolobrika @ladychelseaofthevoid > I don't remember being taught critical thinking in my school. One of the best courses I took in public school was called "Media English". We learned how to spot propaganda, spin, rhetoric and logical fallacies. Had to critique popular media and films (eg. Blade Runner), and understand the psychological impacts of TV advertising, how it effects consumer decisions by indirectly pressuring parents to buy stuff for kids, etc. Great course. One of the films we watched in particular was this one, based on real events. I rewatch periodically even now, because it's brilliant!https://youtu.be/4qlBC45jk3Ihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Wave_(experiment)

@Hyolobrika @toiletpaper I was taught those things by parents and the school. I'm an atheist today. The Christian school was almost cultlike in their indoctrination and I was suicidal when I was 14 because I couldn't imagine a life like this. I was taught that my only role as a girl was to remain chaste for my future husband and to be a helpmeet.
