I'm not writing an entire blog post about how stupid a US TikTok ban would be because this is all that needs to be said:If the Chinese government is in your threat model, don’t install TikTok on your device. Otherwise, your actual problem is surveillance capitalism.

@evacide I'm fine with a ban on Tik Tok for government devices because I think all closed source software should be banned on govt devices. Public money public code. Private citizens however should be allowed to make whatever bad decisions they wish if it only effects them.

@evacide I'm in for the hate on surveillance, but aren't we missing a point there?The average American may not be in fact, *personally* the target of the CN government, but instead they may be the *tool* to create issues for the US government, which definitely has China in its threat model.I mean, you can tell their issue is with this, and not the privacy/security of their citizens, because they wanted control over tiktok.Anyway, pls rid the humanity of tiktok, not just US, thx.

@petko If we're going to destroy surveillance capitalism, it has to apply to all of the platforms, not just the one owned by a country the US government doesn't like.

@malwaretech There are genuine security concerns for, say, journalists or Chinese activists living abroad or even people who work for the US government, but a blanket ban just on TikTok is just some incoherent xenophobic bullshit.

@evacide @malwaretech I’m probably preaching to the choir here but the TikTok/US thing feels like the US looking at TikTok’s media pee pee while at the social media urinal, realising it is bigger, and getting jealous. It’s about control of eyes, rather than protecting people, methinks.
