       @kajord @skrishna They will certainly try. They want the thing back to analyze what happened with it.

       It’s looking increasingly likely that Boeing Starliner astronauts will come home on a SpaceX Crew Dragon. If that happens, that’ll be the end of the Starliner program.To be clear, nothing is certain — but the lack of updates from NASA (and the agency’s lack of transparency) is pretty loud here.

       @skrishna I've heard of single-use spacecraft but half-use? that's innovative! 😬

       @bnys it's just so bad on so many levels if that's what ends up happening (obviously whatever is safest for the astronauts is best but Y I K E S)

       @skrishna I sincerely wanted Boeing to succeed because giving SpaceX all the power is imo increasingly risky

       @bnys @skrishna The whole point of having multiple Commercial Crew providers was so that one was sure to work if the other failed. I remember hammering away at this when I was on the NSS Board. There was constant pressure to "down-select" and pick only one provider (Boeing, of course) on the excuse that it would be cheaper.

       @publius @kajord @skrishna my understanding was that at least some of the problematic components won't survive reentry (by design) so post-recovery analysis isn't possible? Can't find a citation for that right now, though.

       @NoTheOtherNick @bnys @skrishna Unfortunately, it doesn't really matter whether they're competent or not. They have whole office buildings full of people who fill out the paperwork for the Federal procurement process. (Well, and a stable of pet Congressmen!)NASA has always had more flexibility than the rest of the Federal government when it comes to such things, but even so, a whole new set of rules effectively had to be developed for Commercial Cargo and Commercial Crew to happen.
