Has anybody planned out a jumprope mission to Mars? The fuel tanks and nuclear ion engine acts as a counterweight at the end of a long cable for artificial Grav on the way there and then a slingshot to kill the capsule's travel speed for a straight drop down, then the main ship overshoots and works its way back.

@Hcobb Unless you use some sort of fantastical space elevator class tether material, you're not going to get much delta-v out of your slingshot. Also, Mars's atmosphere is right there, so there's a better option for killing the capsule's travel speed. That said, hypersonic skyhook is an idea for getting back up into orbit. A technologically challenging idea, but it's certainly an idea.
