Xmpp is not an 'alternative' to Signal, xmpp is a protocal on which a variety of apps can be built on top of, text, voice and audio chat (conversations) video conferencing ( jitsi) or social media (movim) xmpp can also use a variety of encryption methods currently omemo is the standard, but other better standards could be used ( and omemo is pretty solid already ) Signal, which requires a phone number, is centralized under a shady organization and only works on smartphones(which are all backdoored anyway) is pretty limited and has some unavoidable privacy compromises that can be easily avoided with xmpp. Not saying don't use signal but the idea it is some bulletproof gold standard and that Xmpp is 'insecure' is just false #Signal #XMPP

@ghast @mook signal still requires a phone number to register an account, but you can use a username to connect with other signal users.
