We call "fancy feast" which is Pica's favorite food "McDonald's" in contrast to her expensive, frozen, all natural cat food... which she likes less. Pica *always* wants McDonald's. What do they put in cheap cat food that makes cats so attracted to it? The ingredients are low quality, too much corn. The "meats" are unspeakable.Pica is a slightly underweight cat so she need calorie dense food and lots of it. She likes to eat, hates fish. Have any of you found healthy food your cats like?

She also loves deli meats. (the more processed the better) and human beef jerky (but not sugar free, meat only jerky that's cat safe)In theory cats do not like sugar and can't really taste it like humans can... but is this true? She kinda seems to like things with sugar and corn in them.

@futurebird Everything I have read says cats can't taste sugar because they lack that receptor. So they like ice cream because of the cream, not the sugar. But, each cat is an individual and my 4 wierdos eat Petco house brand catfood which is grain free. But I have no idea if Pica would eat that.

@futurebird This is a question I have also pondered for many years now, really weird. My cat takes dried up kibble bits over anything, and has snubbed many a frozen all-natural food. She's on a kidney diet now but years ago my favorite food was Weruva paw lickin' chicken--looks like it's literally shredded chicken. It was priced like it too. She scarfed it though. Also not sure if it qualifies as calorie-dense. https://www.chewy.com/weruva-paw-lickin-chicken-in-gravy/dp/30223

@futurebird Galadriel is historically a notoriously picky eater, but we had success getting her to eat first Tiki Cat wet food and then Orijen wet food, both of which she now loves. She specifically goes for the red meat-heavy stuff like beef, lamb, venison (though unlike Pica she also loves tuna).

@futurebird We went through this with Camilla, our picky eater, and our local pet store guy (who claimed to be able to find a cat food for any cat) recommended Royal Canin. They don't have any kind of description of the food's ingredients or flavor, but Camilla doesn't care; she just hoovers it up. And when we had to put her on a special diet to avoid bladder stones, they had the right kind for her, thank goodness, or she would waste away.

@futurebird My cats also prefer McDonald's. Its maddening. The only other one they will consider is certain flavors of royal canin. They wont touch the refrigerated kind. They get a small amount of dry food and for that Iams 'healthy enjoyment' must have something addictive that they like a little too much. :blobcatbreadpeek:

@forestine They love stinky stuff so much. When I get a little of her food on my hands I have to wash them forever to get it off.

@futurebird Milli also likes fancy feast, but she’s currently obsessed with the Tiki Cat Stix and plain tuna. She’s also small so she has a couple dry options available at will.

@futurebird cats can't taste sweet, but most foods that are sweet also have plenty of other flavors cats love: fats, oils, salt, water, are all common possibilities. Beyond that, cats want to eat what their people are eating, even if they don't like it. (I've seen several cats steal hot sauce flavored foods only to suffer in return for their efforts.)

@futurebird I have 4 cats. I have been through so many brands of wet food.We went through every flavor of Fussie Cat and they settled on Chicken Formula in Gravy as most edible. They refused all non-chicken flavors. Then I found Earthborn Holistic and they have absolutely cleaned the plate with every flavor - even the fish ones that wouldn't have gotten a second sniff in another brand.Fussie Cat Chicken in Gravy is 682 kcal/kg and the random can of Earthborn Chicken Catcciatori (yes, the names are all puns) I have on hand is 826 kcal/kg.

@futurebird I actually once asked my vet if Fancy Feast was the McDonald’s of cat food. He said “no, it’s the crack cocaine of cat food”. Hard to get them to accept anything else once they’ve tried it.

@futurebird The Fancy Feast Classic Pate flavors have a remarkably low carbohydrate content and no corn.

@futurebird I am moving my car to Smalls. You keep it frozen until the day before. You may need to slowly move your car to it, give the stomach time to adjust. I found adding water or gravy or soup base to it a no no, that will trigger a throw up. My cat is picky and likes it. I feel that the cheap stuff is like candy to cats.

@futurebird When one of my past cats had kidney failure she wouldn't eat anything. She got so thing. We were feeding with hard food so I had the great idea of buying canned food. I bought a few cans and she loved loved loved the cheap Purina cat food (so did the other cats). She could eat a can at a time. She never gained any weight but she could pack it away. It gave her at least another year of life.

@llewelly @futurebird We once had a cat with hyper thyroidism and he got so desperately hungry at times he even broke into things like bread and potato chips. Couldn't digest them of course, but it wasn't from lack of trying.

@futurebird @llewelly He was a good natured cat for the most part. He handled it really well and was still happy for the most part.
