What I see a lot these days are parents who give their kid an iPad or something and let them use it without restrictions, just to keep them busyAnd when something bad happens they often blame the company/app where it happenedOnline child safety starts with parents and not companies I guess

And I'm not saying companies/apps should'nt do whatever it takes to keep it safe, ofc they should do thatAlso I'm not a parent so it's easy for me to say! But I do notice this a lot with the kids from the neighbours for exampleAnd yes, there are other ways! I also had to grow up without an iPad and yet I did gain some tech knowledge

@stux This is not unlike the concerns about television that arose when that medium was new. TV was often nicknamed the "electronic babysitter."But the online/social aspects of the Internet add an extra layer of risk for young people that TV doesn't have.

And while I'm at it... :flan_laugh: Let's talk "solutions"!- Try to monitor the internet traffic of your child- Setup rules to block certain sites- A little more extreme but for kids perhaps a good thing: keyloggerThere is a lot of software to do this, a good example I've used in the past was a self-hosted "AdGuard" (https://adguard.com)This basically acts as a VPN where you can easily setup block rules etc.AdGuard is also supported on @yunohost https://github.com/AdguardTeam

@stux @yunohost As a student, I did an end of year paper on children and violence on television. The conclusion of most studies was that the attitude and guidance of the parents were key to how children deal with the images they see. I guess the same goes for what they find/see on the net today. 35 years ago, computers weren't exactly as common a household presence yet. I'm sure by now there have been some studies into that as well, it wouldn't surprise me if they showed similar results.

@stux totally agree on the parents as guides but I’m less in favour of all-out traffic monitoring. With young kids: filtering age, guard rails. As they grow in their teens, I learned communication is key. Discuss what measures you would like to implement and what they entail. Help them deal with stuff that isn’t for them and that they will encounter, whatever measures are in place. But also learn them they have a right to privacy and experimentation. And that the balance with safety is hard.

@stux I get your suggestion. I have to echo the sentiment that it is not as affective because, most kids can get their hands on technology that the older generations could only dream of (And made the dream come true for the younger generation).

@stux Some things they will tell, some they won’t. But that goes for other aspects of their life as well. Finding the right balance between control and safety and letting them make their own mistakes but making sure there’s a safety net is really hard. And as you say, tools help.

@q_observations For sure! The issue with keeping them from the "wild west web" is that at some point they will go in without filters and then...If it where up to me, it would be taught in school at least to some degree. But often the teachters also have no clue

@stux Yeah the without filters is scary. You try to teach them as much safety guards as possible but you never know. And I totally agree, just like traffic education, financial and health literacy, this should be part of school curriculum. But they’ll indeed need to educate the teachers first. The things I’ve seen at schools (the same office365 password for all students of a year, having students set up MFA themselves at home, but disallowing mobile phones in class which have the totp app).

@stux One of the worst parts is that the company is actually to blame for having specifically designed their app to be habit-forming, but the dynamic is like unto the parent giving their child a habit-forming thing to occupy them because they're too busy, and childcare is too expensive, and the outdoors too car-centric and dangerous, for an alternative.

@stux Tools are not the solution. Parents have to know what their kids do, stay in contact and don't use the device as babysitter.I don't restrict my children, but they have a strong sense what they can and should do on the Internet. We talked a lot about what they do and where and with who they should have contact, private and public profiles and talking to strangers. I will not pull a Von Der Leyen and do pseudo security.

@comrad Well the thing is, there is no solution only "bandages" I guessI would also not restrict my kids acess but also explain (i also love that btw) but not every parent can do this unfortSo in that case perhaps some monitoring would be an option, not a solutionBut i totally agree, I am much more for informing ❤️ If it where up to me teachers would be schooled and it would be more thaught on school.Instead of the "Word, Exel & PP" lessons I got :flan_laugh:
