Data privacy is a much more complex topic than we give it credit for being. How easy is it for a stranger to find someone like you?How easy is it for a company to find you?How easy is it for the government to find you?How easy is it to find ... yourself?Somehow we have a system where the companies have it easiest, strangers (with a little $) are second... the government does OK and you? you know the least of all.By knowing as little as possible it *feels* safer... more private, right?

When I left Facebook I downloaded and reviewed all of the information in their profile of me. It was extensive! Age, profession, race, religion, political leanings, and more. I know that this profile omitted the data they are legally required to pretend they do not collate: such as purchases, SSN, party registration, photos, face metrics, and location trends. But they pinky promise they are not doing that so ... it's fine, right? And they said they deleted it all when I asked! Phew! I'm safe.

Would Steve Bannon lie or commit data crimes that are almost never prosecuted or investigated? Of course not! (and some of it is perfectly legal to "commingle" so, best assume it's happening. But what does that mean?)

@futurebird haven't read all the posts yet, but this reminded me: Years ago, I used an OSINT online tool to check what information my email returned. I got my full postal address, work history (I'm thinking this came from the LinkedIn breach), etc. I keep meaning to work my way through this compendium of data processors to delete my datahttps://github.com/yaelwrites/Big-Ass-Data-Broker-Opt-Out-List?tab=readme-ov-file

@futurebird Always good to remember, that Zuckerberg used to be careless about hiding his narcissism when he was in uni.

@futurebirdI did the same. But ... the moment you are mentioned as a contact of any user on Facebook, they make a new folder with everything they can find about you. But they will never file their old data in there of course, pinky again.Question, how can I test that?

@futurebird Photobucket ‘confirmed’ my account deletion two years ago (I’d signed up but never used the service). This year (post-pb entanglement with Twitter) they emailed with a time-limited offer for me to ‘opt out’ of having any biometric or other information they might harvest from my photos being sold to AI ‘learning’ enterprises. We live in a X-Files world these days: trust no one.

@goaty I think our valid anxiety is exploited to keep tools to have more control over these things out of reach.Listen. DoorDash knows my address, phone, number, credit card and what I ate for dinner. And the theory is this is fine because I voluntarily entered into a relationship with them. Most people want to have some voluntarily relationships with the government, to vote, to get services etc. yet we try to pretend that we are some kind of extreme libertarian country when we just aren't.

@goatyEven to pay taxes ... we need to take that basic step of trust. Instead there is a kind of fiction going on and that can always be destructive and exploitable. Why does the constitution mandate a census? Why was the census not used to determine who is a citizen? It goes back to the "original sin" of the USA, wanting to have the labor and lives of people but not allow them to have any power. The idea of every person eligible to vote... simply voting scares those in power now to death.

@futurebirdAs an engineer who's been a part of discussions about what data can be stored about a user, I can say part of it comes down to company culture at this point. Does the company have a culture where engineers can talk to product and legal and design a system that's both legal and functional, or are they just storing everything? Are there separate databases that have copies, and are they owned by another team? I feel like the risk of bad engineering when it comes to physical engineering is clear, but people don't see how much bad architecture and tech debt leads to lots of problems, including privacy ones. Some of it isn't nefarious, it's just sloppy and lazy and we don't have regulations with teeth to force companies to care enough.

@futurebird Well, as a journalist, I can tell you that researching everything about people doesn't cost any dollars. Especially if these people and their family/neighbours/friends use big platforms it is shocking what you can find out.You only need some know-how in a more professional use of search machines, connected to Google Street view etcReporters in German TV once made a test. Without professional means they could find out so much about test persons that they could commit identity theft.

@futurebird I generally lie about lots of personal data when signing up for accounts, so my public data is probably marginally less useful to amateurs. Anyone who really wants to know something about you can buy info from brokers fairly cheaply.

@futurebird I’ve never joined FB, but expect they have a shadow profile of me or someone who looks and sounds a lot like me, just waiting for the moment when I theoretically join.
