Which handwritten GOTV message would you want to see?1. Thank you for being a voter. Your friends & family may need your reminder to vote. Please vote Nov. 52. Thank you for being a voter. Who you vote for is private but, whether you vote is public record. Please vote on Nov. 53. Thank you for being a voter. Will you vote again on Tuesday Nov. 5? Please plan ahead!I find some of these a little pushy/creepy, but this is a pushy business. What would you write?

@futurebird 2 sounds creepily close to that thing some Republicans were trying to word carefully to almost imply that if people didn't vote Republican they'd come after them.It isn't and it's much clearer that it isn't than their wording, but still a little offputting and threatening sounding.

@nazokiyoubinbou Yeah, though it's shocking how few people know that you can just look up who voted and who didn't in every election. (And this makes claims of "voter fraud" even more absurd. It's public record!)

@futurebird@sauropods.win not 2. It reads like a threat.

@driusan Yeah I thought it was kinda creepy and was shocked "postcards to swing states" suggested it?

@futurebird I'd probably choose (1) and say it like "be sure to remind your friends" to make it sound more "voluntary and easy-going".

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou I had no idea about that (though I'm not American, so perhaps not a useful data point).

@futurebird 2 is bad, but could be made less creepy / threatening. 2. Thank you for being a voter. Just so you can prepare, your vote is private, but that you voted is not. It's public, but please do vote on Nov. 5

@ton Yeah... I still find it pushy. And even though I've seen the evidence that things that are more pushy than what I generally would like to write are effective I'm going with the first one. Although I do think making it more widely known that there is a record is just... polite?

@futurebird I've received GOTV mail with the second message and it really rubs me the wrong way. I'm well aware that my voting participation is publicly available, but it still reads gross and threatening to me. I think my annoyance is compounded by the fact that I have never missed so much as a municipal primary - if I voted any more than I do, it would be illegal 😂 Receiving heavy-handed language encouraging you to do something you already do is such a turn off.

@futurebird I got one a few years back that basically said- Hi, I'm x and I'm asking you to please vote for D. If you need any help getting to the polls you can call xxx-xxxx. Thank you. I found it the nicest way to work on getting out the vote. A post card doesn't wake you from a nap or interrupt a lovely conversation with a friend.

@futurebird Yes, a way to do that protects people at risk of domestic violence, "You promised you voted for ABC, but you never voted at all!"

@futurebird Sorry. That sounded pushy! Sure you must be aware of the angles already, but just thinking out loud and for anyone else who is considering this stuff. A lot of smart and knowledgeable people don't know how voting works. Can't know everything, right?

@ton I've been blowing multiple people's minds by telling them they ought to be voting at least 7 times every 4 years if not more often than that. Explaining and answering questions with patience is always good. And doing so without being condescending. Many people do know all about this stuff, but I don't assume either way ever.

@martin_piper Since the group I'm working with is a 501c3 I think that might break the rules. I'm very confident that simply asking more people to vote nicely will have an impact that I can support. VERY confident.

@futurebird Election Day this year is Tuesday the 5th of November. Try to familiarize yourself with all the candidates and questions on your ballot before then, and don't forget to make your choices known.

@futurebird I don't know if that qualifies as implicitly partisan for tax-status purposes, as the informed voter is the bane of the (R) in 2024.

@futurebird@tonI wonder if there's a way to word it something like "According to voter roles you're a regular voter, thank you! Keep up the good work we need you now more than ever."
