Somehow Democrats have managed to tag republicans as "weird" and made it stick. This has always been hard for Democrats despite the right being deeply weird in all the worst ways since one of the core left values is a kind of acceptance of freakiness. There is however ... a line. A seam, if you will. And something about JD Vance is right over it. 1/

But fundamentally weirdness is great, as long as it isn't being weird about controlling and meddling in other people's private lives and personal choices. And this just happens to be just about the only kind of weirdness Republicans like. Tracking women's periods is weirdTrying to control porn is weird.Caring what hormones someone takes is weird.Republicans have a lot of weirdness and hangups about sex and gender and it's nice to hear that being described for what it is. 2/2

@futurebird it’s kinda thrilling to see what the campaign team is capable of doing, given a viable candidate. I’m not sure how much turnover there was going from Biden to Harris, but I don’t believe there was much if any. We’re only a week in to the new campaign, but it feels like it’s been a month of fun and effective messaging! I wonder what’s getting through to conservatives and swing voters?

@futurebird Yes! They're "weird, in a bad way" and it's so good to hear it!

@hirnsushi Imma let them cook. Nothing ever sticks and I will not be the one to complain. We can fix this after Nov. 5.

@futurebird I've noticed 'weird' is one of those words that changes its meaning slightly based on locality. 'Weird' had more recently been used in a more lighthearted way in the USA. The synonym 'Strange' seems to be the meaning the dems are using to call out the MAGA leaders. But no matter, 'weird' gets the point across that the MAGA leaders are out of the mainstream of culture. The reason it's really pissing off the MAGA is they always claimed they were the normal ones 😅

@futurebird There's benign weird and malignant weird. Vance is totally malignant weird.

@futurebird I have an unfleshed out thought on why “weird” is being effective without a backlash. People who celebrate being weird don’t view it as an insult and people who crave “normalcy” can think of nothing worse than being thought of as not normal. The word is capable of both positive and negative associations depending on the context, whereas deplorable is never positive. So while it’s an attack, it doesn’t come off as mudslinging.

@benetherington @futurebird I think some of it is Harris is more actual left and knows more about convincing people and such, whereas Biden was really a "centrist" (which to most of the world is pronounced "far right," but that's where we are today in America.) She's more willing to actually fight back instead of trying to find some middle ground. With Trump there is no middle ground. He drags everything into the cistern with him. Halfway in is still inside it.

@nazokiyoubinbou @benetherington Biden wasn't just centrist on foreign policy he was a disaster. And yeah yeah yeah Trump would be way worse I was gonna vote for Biden whatever. But the stuff he did made it very hard to ask many other people to do the same because many people I know were mad at him and not over nothing. I think Harris will do a bit better. And that is worth it.

@futurebird @benetherington I can agree with you here. Biden is actually right by the definition the rest of the world uses. We are long past time that the Democrats should be split into being a party called "Democrats" and another called "Republicans." (And the GOP should be renamed the nazi party because seriously.)
