Disappointed that @protonprivacy is jumping on the AI and cryptocurrency bandwagons. Your users want an ethical platform, not just privacy.

@thestrangelet We're really not quick into AI or Bitcoin (and one shouldn't confuse Bitcoin with "crypto"). To put it in perspective, we are slower into supporting Bitcoin than even the big banks who have been issuing Bitcoin ETFs. And we are one of the last companies to build AI functionality, and we did it just for B2B users, and with a local only model that doesn't leak data. We are not by any means a quick mover, but rather a quite slow and cautious mover overall.

@protonprivacy I appreciate the response. What's your position on the environment costs of training AI models and cryptocurrency mining vs. their benefit to society? That's the core question for me.

@protonprivacy @thestrangelet being the last people to implement truly *awful* technology doesn’t make you seem careful or cautious.it makes you seem oblivious at best, and malicious at worst. you waited until the arguments against it were very clear and well-articulated, and then chose to pursue it anyway.you are burning trust, and as a privacy-centric organization, trust is arguably the most important commodity you have.

@protonprivacy @thestrangelet If you wait until the bandwagon has left but still try to jump onto it, the result is that you fall flat on your face in the road

@protonprivacy feels like people are kneejerking about AI. I think this is the announcement:https://proton.me/blog/proton-scribe-writing-assistantIt's just an email writing assistant. The question would be if user's content is used to train it or not, and whether one can opt in (not out) from the training. What plans have it? «Mail Essentials, Mail Professional or Proton Business Suite plan[s], you can [...] try Scribe right now. For Visionary and Lifetime subscribers, Scribe is included [in] your plan».@thestrangelet

@mdione @thestrangelet Hi Marcos, Proton Scribe isn't trained on Proton data, nor will it be trained on Proton data. You can even choose to run Proton Scribe locally on supported devices.

@protonprivacy @mdione Proton, I'd love to hear your take on the environmental impact of LLM's and Bitcoin mining.

@protonprivacy @thestrangelet to confirm, have you decided not to ship the insecure cloud-based version of the LLM writing assistant you previously encouraged your users to use in both the announcement for the new product and its UI? you never responded to my post detailing why it’s not secure: https://mas.to/@zzt/112815913491935363also, “bitcoin isn’t crypto” is debunked cryptocurrency propaganda you really shouldn’t be using in your marketing.

@protonprivacy> "(and one shouldn't confuse Bitcoin with "crypto")"that you even include this aside strongly indicates that not only are you organizationally biased but that you've specifically got bitcoin maximalists in therewhich is a real weird move for a "privacy" company, given now *not* private bitcoin is - so is building a public mapping of users emails to their btc addresseswhy is *Proton* offering the _least_ private way to pay people and telling me its a good thing?

@protonprivacy @thestrangelet the fact that you introduced these features, and the language your promo materials & eamonn maguire use regarding "AI" in announcing proton scribe, *are* the problem. these moves show bad judgement and a disingenuous willingness to misrepresent what LLMs are actually capable of. *you should not have added proton scribe or any bitcoin features to your products*, and should drop those features *and eamonn maguire* from your company - if you care about customer trust.

@protonprivacy @thestrangelet Hi there, hey, you don’t know me, I’m not a customer. I just wanted to say that while I knew OF you, I had never really formed an opinion about you. But for the past few weeks this unending series of tone-deaf fuck-ups has been all over my socials. *This* is how I’m meeting your company for the first time. The marketing message you’re sending to a LOT OF PEOPLE right now is that you cannot be trusted whatsoever. I hope this is helpful.

@protonprivacyWhile I'm upset about the support of a system that encourages the waste of massive amounts of power, if even only during development, the more pressing concern I have is what the model was trained on, and how exactly we as users can verify that, if we even get an answer. You have very effectively alienated a lot of users and managed to burn a lot of goodwill and trust with this move. ..@thestrangelet
