       This came up in a conversation with a friend. My dad raised me that all adults should carry a knife. There’s always a cord to be cut, or a package to be opened, or a hot dog roasting stick to be stripped. I’ve also seen the opposite, where I take out my pocket knife to slice something that needs slicing and a person around me literally gasps, like I just pulled out a handgun at the office.

       @tek @alltherum Ive never been in a situation where having a knife on me would have been more useful or convenient than just using another tool. It’s just foreign to me.

If someone told me they always carried a fishing hook remover, I might wonder why on earth they did that.That said, I strongly believe a pocket knife is the sort of thing that seems unnecessary until you have one, and then it becomes something you reach for reflexively. Say I'm trying to open a bag of dog food and it’s refusing to tear. I *could* brute force it, or bite the corner to get it started. But instead, I’ll get my knife and cut it.
