: : In preparation for a 30 year highschool reunion a group text gets going with “all the old gang” — it is only when the weekend gets going that they realize someone has shown up that no one can really remember. “Deborah”Everyone assumes that she is someone’s spouse, or date— or someone who transferred schools— in reality she is a stranger who inherited the old number of their deceased friend—and she’s just shown up since the text messages made it seem fun— possible to be a part of something.

This could be a horror story in two ways— one is the more obvious— Deborah is the monster. But there is some interesting psychological horror to explore in telling the story from the point of view of a Deborah — her fear of being caught— the strange needs that drive her to take such a risk.

@futurebird like one of those wrong number horror stories except that in this case, it is the right number but wrong person. a sort of wrong right number. spooky.

@futurebird See, my mind was already going down the "what made her do this" path and completely ignored the "she's gonna murder someone" possibility.

@futurebirdThe original group has lost touch with that friend and nobody really knows why, but there is a vague rumor that they were in a cult. They quickly realize that this person was not Deborah, but begin to believe that they are controlling Deborah's communication. They geolocate the person who inherited the phone number and go to their door, but finding no Deborah, believe that they have killed her. The only option the person has is to pretend that they are Deborah, but have (transitioned)/(had to get a new identity and only keep the number for sentimental reasons). Its a bittersweet story which is initially horror as they are effectively accidentally kidnapped, but Deborah is an escape into a new identity, and it strains their original life as they have to live both. Deborah is at the reunion, but had joined a cult, has changed her name, and has no memory of high school

@futurebird Some of the group are so distressed or embarrassed that they seem to have forgotten this person existed that with no more than a nudge of encouragement, they gaslight themselves into 'remembering' her. Soon half the people present are convinced she was on the cheerleading squad or in their AP History class, and reminiscing about the funny messages she wrote in their yearbooks.

@futurebird The real horror story to me here is a 30 year highschool reunion organised by someone who considers us “the old gang".

@futurebird I mean, the premise is great, but if you want a great horror story, you have to go beyond the obvious, and question the reader/viewer's perspective : Deborah was invited, even by mistake, so why would it be right to deny her hospitality ? What makes Deborah less suitable for the reunion than people you met 30 years ago ? Were you really that good friends with all of them ? Are they actually less strangers to you now than Deborah is ? Are you even less a stranger to young yourself ?
