😂 Barstow to Vegas suggested route by Google Maps.(ps. I love the Mojave National Preserve, but NOT IN SUMMER. NO CELL PHONE SERVICE, NO GAS, no services, single lane roads. Alternate roads there are 4wd gravel... awesome place to explore IN WINTER). #BakerIncident #LasVegas #Vegas #Mojave

I do know where the pay phone for the Mojave National Preserve was. Dunno if it is still there. It was not working last time I went through. (my photo below) #payphone #photography #mojavenationalpreserve #desert #mojave

Waze gives a different Mojave/Kelbaker cutoff -- I would not take it in heavy traffic in high heat, no gas stops, no services, extremely high heat.

If you're out there, they had excellent coin showers at the Hole-in-the-Wall Campground. Dunno if they are open at this time of year, it's brutal out there in summer, would NOT recommend a trip out there unless you enjoy heat stroke. #HoleInTheWallCampground #Mojave https://www.recreation.gov/camping/poi/246848

@ai6yr There's a good paved route through there.. cima road, kelbaker road, just drove it last fall. Just make sure you have gas for the whole route plus margin. Absolutely no services but it is the Mojave. Literally every driver should have a paper map for the area in the car. Five bucks takes up no space rarely used doesn't matter, it's that one time you need it... Costs you nothing otherwise.

@ai6yr Let me scream, AGAIN, at the top of my lungs. WE NEED AN ALTERNATE, RELIABLE ROUTE BETWEEN VEGAS AND SAN DIEGO/LOS ANGELES!!!!!I-15 IS NOT A RELIABLE ROUTE!!!!! IT IS A SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE OPERATION!!!!!I'm over the moon that Kramer Junction eventually got its much needed bypass.

@5klp471 @ai6yr It's not likely to happen, it's simply earth and geography. The Mojave is huge. There's nothing commercial or residential within it. Humans don't have control over this. It's a long and dangerous and frankly stupid route, driving LA to LV is absurd, I agree often necessary due to lack of alternatives. Try driving east to west anywhere in the 20,000 sq miles of the Grand canyon! Crazy, man! Hundred mile stretches of "can't get there from here"!

@tomjennings @ai6yr I still keep all my Thomas Guides, in plastic bags in the pare tire compartment. 20 years out of date of course, but rural roads don't change that often.

@tomjennings @ai6yr Vegas itself is an extravagant waste of resources. Letting Vegas grow into such a huge metropolis only benefitted the developers who bought all that land cheap and built on it willy nilly.Rail really should have been kept up when it was feasible, but Standard Oil, now Exxon, and Firestone, along with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler killed all that.Makes me wonder what the lithium in the overturned semi that caused all this was meant for.

@tomjennings @ai6yrNot sure what the names were, but we had wonderful times years ago all alone on similar (maybe the same) roads through the Mojave. Nights under the stars were spectacular. We started doing those desert runs as weekend trips — Friday after work until Monday morning, home just in time to shower b4 work — to explore while living in L.A. Red Rocks, sometimes as far as the Grand Canyon, etc. Always slept in the car. Lotsa water, fuel, maps — pre-GPS! Jack Rabbits everywhere — wow!

@RunRichRun @ai6yr Yeah driving the Mojave is amazing. Last year I took our oldest dog June in the old Rambler, visited Mojave lava tube caves then camped at Hole in the Wall.

@W6KME @tomjennings They re-issued the Southern California Thomas Guides a couple of years ago, I bought several copies (one for each family vehicle).

@tomjennings @ai6yrNot familiar with that area/those formations. Sound really interesting. We used to set out w/ maps from AAA and the big, old USGS topos. Goals were drivable, passable roads for a semi-reliable, old sedan (what you could afford out of college years ago) and maybe a feature we saw on the maps or destinations unknown with time to explore b4 having to turn return — whatever struck our fancy out the window — or old reliable sites. Sometimes had to turn back but never disappointed!
