I've been reading that Silicon Valley tech giants adopted a strategy of intentionally overhiring during the era of low interest rates simply to lock up talent and keep it out of the hands of the competition. Obviously that doesn't apply to the DEI wastes of space, but it goes to show how the Fed's meddling allowed established corporate players to fuck with the market and stifle innovation and competition within highly competitive industries for over a decade.

The catch is that the best devs command a premium so it's rather expensive to slap on golden handcuffs. Big competition can simply pay $100k/yr more and poach them instantly. Little guys can simply not care how many hours they (don't) work and poach them without too much effort.

Normal good devs make $200k - $600k depending on how terrible the working conditions are, so a 15-30% raise is significant.People making more than that usually aren't making that because of their uber h4xorz skillz, it's because of corporate politics or structuring nonsense. They're getting paid a ton because they're a founder, or are a supposed "specialist" in the hip hot shit for the moment, or someone's nephew, or have a famous name, or are a "manager", not because their Python code is twice as valuable as a normal good dev. As such, poaching them isn't worthwhile from a profit standpoint.

They do. I once worked in the same building (different company) as an ex Valve core engine dev. Dude practically co-invented deferred shading. He made $750k/yr back in the early 2000's, but the tradeoff is hell. 80+ hours of nothing but crunch. He nearly died from health issues due to stress. Later he went to Unity, then was doing his own shit when I met him.

The industry is already going Galt. I quit years ago and am now writing a game while living for peanuts in Mexico, along with a friend who did the same.The best dev I know works for Corsair and basically does nothing at all, working from home, while making $150k to occasionally poke some hardcore OBS code.Another skilled dev I know is about to buy some land in the Rockies, build an Uncle Ted cabin, and just retire to the woods. He's 31, I think, and writes drivers for a living.

A friend of mine (who practically singlehandedly wrote their whole data ingest system) got $50k from his options when the place he worked got acquired. Spread over his time at the company and divided into his salary, it was equivalent to around a 5% raise. Peanuts.The "$10k to $50k per day" nonsense from the matt.sh article is bad accounting of the handful of devs who did win the stock option lottery while ignoring the devs who didn't and the differences between them (luck and politics). If you can't use it to buy a hamburger tomorrow, it's not actual pay.

Worse.Tech degrees are mostly worthless. If you have the skills, you can get a job without the degree, no problem. If you don't have the skills, a degree won't get you past the interviews, nor will (US) colleges teach you a single useful thing about computers.Networking certifications are often worthwhile though. Look at job posts to see what employers actually want.

I would actively avoid anyone with a recent CS degree unless their FOSS repos were particularly impressive. Graduates pick up countless bad habits and mentalities from universities. Remember, 98% of CS professors these days are washouts who couldn't manage to hold down a junior dev job that pays twice as much as college professor.

With tech, you have a short window for the company to blow up (and get bought out), and if your stock has warrants or non-dilution provisions it's valuable (unless the company isn't going anywhere).

I wish I hadn't put finishing my degree on hold for a startup job. Finding a position as a corporate cog would've also been draining, but by the end of my time at the startup I was sent into a downward spiral of burnout from which I never recovered. The person I was when I first went off to school is no more, the inspiration I used to have that drove me to imagine random projects and work on them no longer exists.

It's no better than any other degree, but it is a degree, and you have to have a degree.BTW, my major was "Physics". I was supposed to unravel mysteries of the Universe.

Tried Ritalin for a day and it was like the most productive 4 hours of my life. I cleaned the entire house and did all my laundry and organized my laundry and closet. Wife was like "yeah no get that shit out of here" 😂

I was on SSRIs and then SNRIs. When I tried experimenting with psilocybin and felt nothing I did some research and found out those drugs interfered with the effects, so I stopped taking them. Then after I was done experimenting, I decided I didn't want to go back to apathetic brain fog land.

I sort of understand the logic of a drug that erodes any ability for you to feel strong emotions when you're at a crisis point where an "emergency brake" needs to be pulled, but I learned real quick that the prevailing medical consensus seems to be to keep you on that shit for the rest of your life afterwards.
