Large groups of people in Asian countries believe that the U.S. democracy used to be a good example for others to follow, but isn't anymore.#politics https://www.statista.com/chart/32677/share-of-asian-respondents-who-say-us-democracy-is-not-no-longer-a-good-example/

@yogthos I think it was Mao who said, "A nail which sticks out gets hammered down." I have to wonder who decides who is sticking out and who gets to use the hammer. I don't see any redeeming features in the current Chinese power structures.

@davevolek if you don't see any redeeming features in power structures that lifted over 800 million people out of poverty, and have continuously improved the lives of the working majority for the past 70 years, I really don't know what else to tell you.

@yogthos Good point. But other nations with other systems have done the same. Most people in North American before 1920 were living day-to-day, barely making enough for food and rent. And it was their voting power that put FDR in charge and gave him the mandate to do something about the depression. The people need to have some input, both in their leadership and in the decisions. China does not get high scores in this matter.

@davevolek except they haven't, US was on a brink of a revolution in the 30s with violent uprisings like the Redneck revolt.FDR passed the New Deal to avoid Soviet style revolution from happening, and the ruling class has been rolling that back ever since.I also urge you to actually learn how the system in China actually works. People have far more input that anyone living in the west.

@davevolek here's how people have input in Chinese system https://news.cgtn.com/event/2021/who-runs-the-cpc/index.htmlFurthermore, every poll and study on China shows that vast majority of people see their system as being democratic. I'm sure you know something people actually living in China don't though.https://web.archive.org/web/20230511041927/https://6389062.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net/hubfs/6389062/Canva%20images/Democracy%20Perception%20Index%202023.pdfhttps://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-06-26/which-nations-are-democracies-some-citizens-might-disagreehttps://www.tbsnews.net/world/china-more-democratic-america-say-people-98686https://web.archive.org/web/20201229132410/https://en.news-front.info/2020/06/27/studies-have-shown-that-china-is-more-democratic-than-the-united-states-russia-is-nearby-and-ukraine-is-at-the-bottom/

@yogthos@mas.to Saw some article from a Chinese person saying, essentially, "in China you have 1 choice but lots of change, in America you have 2 choices but no change". @davevolek@mastodon.social

@yogthos The Tibetans, Uighur, and Taiwanese would disagree with these polls. The Mongolians in Inner Mongalia would prefer to join their mother country. Mongolia and Siberia may be in the hands of Chinese in a decade anyways. This model of governance is not suitable for the 21st century. Same for western democracy.

@davevolek@mastodon.social In @yogthos@mas.to defense, he said "vast majority", and you're over here citing stark minorities (with zero evidence, mind you). All the Mongolians I've ever met (in Inner Mongolia) were quite content to be apart of the PRC vs. Mongolia---Mongolia is a pretty poor country without much opportunity. Can't really say much about Tibet nor Xinjiang, but those are tiny groups, and Tibet without China would be extremely poor as well, similar to Nepal. Taiwanese are Chinese, and they've had half a century of anti-mainland sentiment on their diet...I wouldn't really put much stock into their opinions therein. Strange, though, that I've run into many Taiwan Chinese living and working in Shanghai who are pretty ambivalent to the whole Taiwan vs. Mainland contention and are more or less quite happy with being in the PRC. A lot of the Taiwan Chinese I know complain about how insane the cost of housing in Taiwan is. Anyway, just personal anecdotes and insights.
