I've been watching the #MastodonForHarris fundraising with interest. Heidi just posted some stats.$312,983from 3756 peopleAverage contribution: $835% of these, 183 are recurring contributions (I suspect that there may be more reluctance here to do automatic recurring contributions because of the general distaste for subscriptions among independent social media users.)1/

I keep thinking looking at this and other fundraising efforts "were the democrats really willing to just leave all this money on the table going into the election?"The small dollar, but numerous donations are just a more concrete representation of the enthusiasm that would have been left on the table. But this kind of thinking presumes that this response could be predicted. I don't think it's that cut and dry. 2/

@futurebird I like to do my political donations as lump sums as early as possible, for maximum effectiveness, because I can--unfortunately, that means I get a *lot* of fundraising pitches from the campaigns who assume logically that there's more there to be gotten and I'm a potential very large donor.

There are some on the right who think this has all been engineered. If so? Then Bravo! That would be some masterful political gamesmanship. I don't think there are many campaign managers who'd want to be where Biden was two weeks ago. It was BLEAK. I also see many people who are pointing at media calling the that low-point that forced this decision engineered. There is some truth to this. To some degree the "age issue" was fake. 3/

But it was not fake without the ring of truth. And then again, there is all of this energy that Democrats felt they *didn't need* to tap to win. I have some questions about that. But I shall save them until after November. 4/4

@futurebird form an outsider perspective. It seems a bit more like broken clock politics rather than anything engineered. The announcements of the changes were certainly been timed to try to maximise their impact, but I don’t think the party machine expected how big the impact would be. So yes the hubris questions should still be asked

@futurebird I think they were willing. As much as the (D) just *love* small-donor fundraising, they also have big-time incumbency and seniority bias. And that shuts out energy in the constituent areas of their "safe" keystones, like Pelosi and Schumer. The US Army once had "make room" propaganda circulating, to encourage older military people to retire on time, so that it doesn't throttle the promotions pipeline. Without that mentality, the (D) party just gets older.

@futurebird I do not know if I believe the insider reporting because it is usually gossip. But the reporting is that Pelosi and Obama were very concerned about Biden starting earlier this year and have been navigating a careful path to convince him to step aside without embarrassing him or creating a public firestorm. It appears they managed to convince him just in time.

@futurebird I'm sad to see money here on Fedi get spent on political campaigns when so many #MutualAid and #BegPost toots go unfunded and unboosted. I genuinely thought there was a culture here of taking care of each other while the rich take care of themselves at our expense. That fundraising number really is a drop in the bucket to the campaign, they've got very wealthy donors. But to individuals who need money now, that amount would save several lives. Please, if you think about giving to a political campaign or large charity just give that $5 or $20 to an individual in need. They won't use it to text me a reminder to vote in a state I no longer live in. That is to say the individual person in need won't waste it.And I get the excitement over individuals raising that kind of money for a single candidate, that's a lot of small donations which are effectively vote pledges. But people could just pledge to vote...
