I'm developing a mild side obsession with six-gill sharks. (Hexanchus griseus) Let me tell you the features:* Long* No dorsal fin? No wait there it is in the back* Huge doleful eyes* Murky lurkers* Just wanna eat!* Cool shape and sleek long fashionable tailThese are the best sharks. The great white is so basic. I love all graceful yet deeply awkward creatures. What is your favorite fish?

@futurebird Sixgills are excellent, my favorite fact about them is they get put on lists of "world's longest sharks" because a young specimen that was 2.3 feet long lost it's decimal in printing and the error was repeated for decades. The big females usually get about 12 feet long.

@futurebird manta rays, no question about it. Big ones, small ones (some as big as your head!) don't care I love them all[in looking up what else counts as a ray, I found out that Batoids are a subclass(??) of sharks!] But also the giant mola / ocean sunfish! It's like the SmartCar of fish - just sorta the first third and then it just... ends.

@futurebird Hexanchus are wonderful, and there are many classic favorites among cartilaginous fish, from Stethacanthus to the cow-nosed ray and the sawfish, but cladistically I can pick any vertebrate, so I'm picking Tupandactylus.

@futurebird I love this thread so much. I never know how to pick a favorite, but one that comes to mind is a wrasse I encountered once in a deep aquarium in Aotearoa New Zealand. They change sex! The guide said the wrasse had been an alpha female, bossing everyone around, but then became a beta male and had taken to hiding behind things. 😂🩶

@futurebird "According to the International Shark Attack File, there has been only one documented provoked attack on a human since the 1500s. The bluntnose sixgill shark appears to be at ease in the presence of divers."Less stressful than a great white, for sure. :)
