At this point, I'm practically paying like, 150$ for 2 domains. How? Because of Email costs me like, and extra 50$ almost.Really considering making my own mail server... Unless it's not worth it.

@sun @anonicus And even if you are, don't do it. GMail's "anti-spam" (really EEE) tactics make it pretty much pointless today. :blobfoxgooglycry: :blobfoxdisgust:

@anonicus Making your own mail server really isn't that hard as long as you already have a server and control over DNS.For many distros there is email packages that you can just install and have work, but manually configuring qmail or exim and DMARC+SPF+DKIM isn't that hard.

@sun @anonicus It honestly feels like Google is projecting, because most of the spam e-mails today come from GMail. :blobfoxdisgust:

@tk @anonicus @sun I really haven't seen any issues with gmail - you don't want to send emails to anyone on gmail anyway.

@Suiseiseki @anonicus Making it isn't hard. Keeping it from getting owned and used as a bot farm to send out phishing/spam, getting your IP blacklisted, is. By nature, if you have a relay, and you have to in order to have a functional mail server, they will see it and immediately start attacking it.

@tk @anonicus @sun As a sysadmin, I agree with this. Most of our "change my direct deposit" emails come straight from a valid Gmail address that is disposable. They come right through filters. Why we're looking at AI driven spam/phishing protection. Without something that understand contextual factors, spam/phishing filters are becoming useless. They are getting too good at just making up random email accounts and directly targeting your executive users with phishing/account compromise attempts. No way for a classic Bayesian/signature based filter to stop that.

@anonicus @Suiseiseki I'm sure all those emails are credential stealing phishing or something similar to try to get access to your configuration so they can take it over. Do you obfuscate your domain ownership information? Otherwise they can get all your contact info from a basic WHOIS search...The moment they know you're a valid target, you will never be left alone. I'm so glad I no longer manage an on-prem Exchange server. All in the cloud now. Let our cloud provider worry about maintenance, downtime and securing the mail relay. It's the one thing you just can't effectively secure against attacks because the nature of it requires it to be open to talk to other mail servers. I spent so many late nights patching, fixing drive array issues, etc.

@Suiseiseki @anonicus What's amazing to me is how many big businesses STILL do not have SPF/DKIM/DMARC setup properly and I spent a lot of time clearing our quarantine out because of it. I have everything that is a spoofed email without validation sent to quarantine because so many phishing emails were getting through otherwise.

@sun If you self-host, you can just install spamassassin, which is very good at detecting obvious spam with a low error rate.

@anonicus@shitposter.world For domains, I am using Namecheap. My .com domain costs £12.29/year and my .xyz is £11.60/year (£23.89 total) according to namecheap, but they charge in USD so I pay less than that. I think you can go cheaper with a registrar like porkbun though so it might be best to look around :)For email, I am using Tuta with a plan that doesn't exist anymore unfortunately - it's like 1.3€/month and works just fine for my personal email. I'm using Zoho mail's free option on my .xyz email - 5 users with 5GB/user which is pretty good honestly.could I transfer my emails to said new email server?I'm not too sure about that, sorry :(

@dg54321 @Suiseiseki @anonicus I've run my own mail server for a couple of decades now. I suggest to most technically-oriented people that they do so, if only for a vanity domain of some sort, because handing this vital piece of the Internet over completely to a handful of big tech companies is a goddamn tragedy. That said, you will run into massive deliverability problems unless you are willing to put in a great deal of time or outsource this part to some kind of SMTP relay service. It's definitely not for everyone.

@Suiseiseki @sun i use a dns blacklist with sendmail. i forget which one. might be spamassassin. it works well though. i get almost no spam on my mail server i've been running for years. IP reputation for email is a struggle now though. the main challenge is making the big providers not reject your mail by IP

@JoshuaSlocum @Suiseiseki @anonicus Personally, I would agree. If I had my own company and domain to worry about, I'd do it myself as much as I hate managing a mail server on prem. But I'm not going to complain about my company, that I have no personal investment in, making my job and life easier by dumping it into the cloud and paying the ever increasing premium that comes with.

@ZRDR_DelRio @anonicus @Suiseiseki If you look at the headers, it's probably coming from a different relay every time. Hard to block a sender when it keeps changing. You can put whatever you want in the "FROM" field but the real info is in the header itself, that the average user doesn't see. We get at least one attack a month that way; the threat actor claims to be from our internal domain but if you look at the header it's being spoofed from somewhere else. Legit, but not our internal domain. Of course the user won't look at the "this is not an internal email" banner in bright orange at the top of the email and clicks on shit anyways....
