Does anyone know of anyone offering managed Forgejo hosting?(I don’t mean Codeberg. All my stuff is already on Codeberg. I mean where I could have my own VPS running Forgejo just for our own projects but where I wouldn’t have to deal with managing yet another server.)#forgejo #hosting #vps #fediMind

@aral I'm fairly sure Gitea was going to/is offering that, but is also one of the reasons for the original fork to Forgejo. I'm not aware of anything offhand.

@aral Think the closest you'll get is a VPS with Yunohost that sets up forgejo for you, for now.

@aral fwiw I set it up for ourselves earlier today and it ... just works? Mostly involved installing the package and setting some defaults in the web UI. And postgres, but that's optional. A pleasant surprise overall. So managing a server would mostly involve backups and updates, it looks. Which is admittedly still more than not having to do that, yes :) but don't have an answer to the actual question.

@aral I was thinking of running an instance for the computational common allmende.io, alongside the existing lab.allmende.io GitLab.We don't always need all of its features and sometimes I just need a git and that's itThe application is simple and we still have enough compute left at @ecobytes Also I wanted to offer you our self-managed PowerDNS at some point, which is now closer to being available for API use, if you wanted to test that.Should we roll a git.allmende.io Forgejo instance?

@yala @ecobytes Hey Jon, thanks so much for the offer, appreciate it. I’m looking for something to run on the small-web.org domain though. I’ll definitely check out your work though :)

@yala @ecobytes I mean, that would be lovely but I’d hate to inconvenience you. I’m off to vote now but may I ping you over the weekend or towards the end of next week after I’m back from my talk in the Netherlands?(And thanks again, I appreciate even the thought alone.)

@aral The setup should be pretty easy and straight forward. If you already have your own VPS or you want to use your own, I would suggest to host it yourself. If you need help or have problems you can contact me here via DM or us via the forgejo matrix chat. :ablobcatrave:

@Codeberg Sounds great, thanks. Outside my price range, sadly, for a single org/non-public instance where I’ll be hosting only a handful of repositories but great to see initiatives like this start to exist :)(And it’s all thanks to you folks for making it possible.)💕

@algernon @Codeberg If it was along the lines of the first two tiers of toot.io’s pricing (which I’m familiar with as Jan hosts my Mastodon server), it would probably be a no-brainer for the lack of hassle of managing the server myself.https://toot.io/pricing.htmlWondering if Forgejo can be configured to allow forks only for public accounts to limit usage while allowing contributions. Or maybe it’s worth waiting until federation to run such an instance.

@algernon @Codeberg Basically, I just need a fast/dependable place for our own projects (especially since apps on the Small Web are installed via git so if a repository is slow or unavailable it affects the overall performance of setting up new Small Web servers) while allowing for community contributions but not a place where anyone can host their own projects. (That’s what Codeberg, etc., are for.) :)

@aral Not a real simple answer but:https://cloud68.co/managed-hosting.htmlonly has GitLab but has a “Request” button and page to suggest adding new “nice free open source platform (released under a permissive license) that you would like to see in this list”https://hostman.com/marketplace/ has Gitea, so maybe can be negotiated with them to get Forgejo instead?

@aral @algernon @Codeberg how important are features like collaboration and CI/CD? You might be able to get away with running something lighter like https://codemadness.org/stagit.html and a git server on port 9418 for serving repos via git://

@4censord I was actually really looking forward to using CoreOS for the servers set up with Domain¹ but it’s been a nightmare trying to find affordable VPS hosting that supports CoreOS as a first-class citizen. Tried to get Hetzner and Fedora to work together to support it but several years later we’re no nearer that being a thing so I’m going with AlmaLinux on Hetzner to begin with.@algernon @Codeberg

@stevelord Yeah, I did think about rolling my own simple git remote in Node.js but I don’t want to introduce a deployment step for Small Web apps. You should just be able to deploy them from their regular remote (e.g., Codeberg or *spit* GitHub). @algernon @Codeberg

@nclm @aral just happened to see this. We don't feel comfortable with lots of 'open source washing' that is being done the last years by various companies and the situation with licensing is becoming quite tricky. Maybe we should blog about it and share our frustration. We have also seen many cases of FLOSS projects that have not been friendly towards us when we ask them if they are ok with us providing managed hosting of their software.

@Cloud68 @nclm Fair enough. Although I assume @forgejo or @Codeberg have not been hostile towards you as I’d be very surprised to hear if that was the case. Quite on the contrary, I would assume they would very much welcome such a thing.

@nclm @aral just to give a bit more context: we use automation tools like Ansible to deploy, provide software updates etc and adding a new software on the list requires quite a bit of time. That's why we try to avoid adding immediately Managed Hosting services for new software.

@aral @nclm @forgejo @Codeberg to be fair we haven't contacted them, but we have the same feeling based on perception only. What happened in our case is that people started requesting Managed Hosting for Gitlab and almost no requests for other git software. Being a small by design team sometimes limits on being proactive on offering other software for the reasons mentioned previously, although this is not to justify the reason of not having those on the list of services.

@Cloud68 @nclm @forgejo @Codeberg Yeah, Gitlab is corporate/enterprise while Forgejo is maintained by a tiny not-for-profit (Codeberg) + community. So if you were to contact them I’m sure you’d find a very different atmosphere. But I understand the lack of resources issues all too well (being part of a different tiny and currently unfunded not-for-profit) :)
