I just stumbled on this article about why tangata whenua use a pepeha and what it means to them, and offers advice for how Pākeha can confidently use one in public life:https://e-tangata.co.nz/reflections/pepeha-for-non-maori/#pepeha #ETangata

Yeah, this is a great article from e-Tangata (as usual). Really insightful stuff in this particular one and I changed how I introduced myself as a result. @strypey

@futuresprog > Really insightful stuff in this particular one. I changed how I introduced myself as a resultAbsolutely. For one thing, after more than 30 years of learning Te Reo, I can't believe it never occurred to me to that the "wai" in "ko wai" derived from "wai" as the word for water. The practical suggestions are indeed helpful guidance. I have... thoughts about some of the framing around them. But that's a topic for a carefully considered blog post, not Mastodon hot cakes.@Skivling

@strypey Realy cool and give me good insight as to how to frame my own pakeha pepeha. I like the framing it about connection. Growing up on a farm in the semiarid West of the US I do have mountain and river. The larger the snowpack on Shafer Butte the better the flow of the flow of the Boise river and the more water for our farm (and recreation as well as the regional economy and well-being). I see how sharing this can create connection. Cool
