EVERY TIME YOU TACK-WELD A BATTERY INTO AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE, THE GOD OF REPAIRABILITY AND HARDWARE MAINTAINABILITY COMES INTO YOUR HOUSE AND PISSES IN YOUR SOCK DRAWER

@foone I dunno, feels pretty lenient to me.I'd drop a douce, especially after having pulled numerous examples of these crimes against humanity off Gottlieb System 3 pinball boards. And if it wasn't bad enough, the company thought "it'll last forever, let's just program the NVRAM at factory and not make a proper reset feature in case the battery goes bad".So recovering from a failed battery is just banging your head to the wall while painstakingly setting every setting by hand. There's 100s.

@foone@digipres.club good, I’ll make popsicles out of it. Thanks again foone for pissing in my sock drawer. The amount of money saved really shows I no longer buy those expensive popsicles from the store for an afternoon snack.

the worst part? this is a device I'm tearing down, yeah, but it's also a device I rely on every day for medical reasons: I bought a second one to tear it down.so now I know my legit one has a limited lifespan.

@foone You risk explosion if you try to solder these things. Spot welding the solder tags is the only safe way. Also: the spot welded tabs makes them a through hole component, easy to replace:

@foone @cyrus I used to be surprised by things like this, but then I learned about the Remington Model 700.See, the Remington Model 700 was perfectly fine at firing when the trigger was pulled. But it could also fire when the trigger wasn't pulled, causing injury and death. Remington sold this rifle for more than 40 years, despite knowing of the flaw and knowing a way to fix it... because the fix would have made each rifle 5.5 cents more expensive to produce.

@foone @cyrus ironically it's almost exactly the same price per unit for a non-welded socket as a welded socket once you get to about 10k pcs because the plastic pieces cost $0.0001 at that volume, whereas the metal pieces are bounded by the total material mass. the cost difference is a rounding error.my guess would be one (or more) of:- they already had a welder in the production line and it'd be a machine change- there's a medical device compliance spec that requires it- they're idiots

@foone I once had to fix an old 386 pc, it wouldn't remember the time or settings between bootsNo obvious battery to replace eitherFound the clock chip which looked really weird, twice the thickness of the other chips, so I took a closer lookTurned out to be a plastic case on top of the chipUnderneath was a TTL clock chip but the power legs were bent the wrong way & soldered to a small nicadI replaced it with a couple of leads & a battery holderNot ideal but it worked for years

@foone Can we talk about the "no baby" etching on there? Did someone have a baby that would disassemble electronics and eat the battery unless the battery was literally tack welded on to the board? How many babies died like that before they changed the process to tack welding the thing down?

@foone No one could *possibly* ever want to use this device more than 2.0 years, right?Meanwhile a bunch of people out there are running 40 year old consoles on CRTs.Like even if it's just two bars squished together vaguely holding in the battery, at least have some acknowledgement that CR2032/etc batteries aren't infinite?(For the record though, I've seen some die on computer motherboards that were still well within a reasonable use period even in this market of throw everything away every 2 years or so.)
