I still don't get what point he's making by talking about "the late great Hannibal Lecter" I think it started by saying the immigrants are "from mental institutions and prisons" ? So they are like Hannibal Lecter... but he's also "great"I do not get it.Can someone explain the joke/racism/nonsense whatever it is to me please?

@futurebird@sauropods.win I think he was trying to talk about Hannibal. The Carthaginian general., or whatever. That’s my guess.

@futurebird Hannibel Lecter is a fictional character, but I suppose Trump is drawing upon his psychotic behavior as some sort of parallel to immigrants. Although, he's also characterized as a brilliant physician.

@mehitobel @rimesparse I'm thinking about all the sober news reports talking about "asylum seekers" and then how it must seem like those of us who say that, no, people are not being sent here from "insane asylums" what are you talking about must sound like we're full of it... They said it right on the news!I don't even know where to start with that one.

@futurebirdI felt at first like he was trying to be sarcastic. "You know what a *great* guy Hannibal Lecter is, right?"It's possible he's confused the term asylum, but I think it's more likely that he's parroting the stuff people used to say about Castro emptying prisons and asylums to send people to the US when we first broke ties with Cuba. I remember my mom talking about it in the 70s.

@mehitobel @rimesparse I mean where to start is just explaining the difference with patience and making journalists aware of this possible confusion so they can use more clear language. This won't solve the problem for those who WANT to believe for other reasons. But there is nothing profitable in being mean about what people don't know. For all of us there are things we don't know... and worse things we don't even know we don't know.

@futurebird OK. I am gonna say it’s not as complex as people think. 1) immigrants = bad people 2) Hannibal Lecter = the worst of the bad, so he is “The Great Hannibal Lecter” - immigrants are like that 3) standard sarcastic praise goes with that status4) Trump hears the woke are baffled by his “joke” - it is getting traction5) repeat ad nauseum

@futurebird trump's word salad doesn't come from a logical mind, nor is it intended to be processed by any. It's just vague associations intended to increase certain gut feelings. Fear, anger, greed, nostalgia, whatever works to distract the marks. At least that's my theory fwiw.

@helianthropy @rimesparse endless ablism especially mental illness ablism then mix in the racism and nationalism...I wish that it were verboten to exploit such impulses to try to win elections. There are long term prices to pay for feeding such nonsensical ideas. There are prices for everyone to pay in the end. But the most vulnerable pay first.

@IngaLovinde @futurebird @rimesparse Yes. In all these cases "refuge" would be a better word to use than "asylum". The latter is an antiquated legalese term that doesn't match modern colloquial usage and that comes across less humanizing.

@dalias @IngaLovinde @rimesparse I didn't know that. But, it makes sense. It was obvious to me that "seeking asylum" meant seeking legalized recognize safety and care. I even thought it was IDK... kind sounding? So I'm in a state of shock realizing it could be taken in this other way... drawing on another term we don't use anymore "insane asylum" (hospital? mental health care with inpatient care? )

@futurebird @IngaLovinde @rimesparse Yeah I didn't realize the "insane asylum" link either. But I've always felt the "seeking asylum" characterization was implying something akin to "they're not actually refugees but might legally be entitled to some protective status".

@futurebird @mehitobel @rimesparse Trump's stream of consciousness rambling isn't going to make sense. The true believers apply their own interpretations to his bloviations that draw from Alex Jones and the rest of that insane media. Also trump is an abusive, gaslighting performance artist.

@icastico I think you are right but #4 is a little sad because sometimes people are just... confused. Like. Talking about Hanibal isn't some woke did that offended my evil communist liberal values. It was a interesting movie with a creepy antagonist. Um. I'm just sincerely lost why we are discussing it so much? I really like Jaws too. Maybe we could talk about that movie next?

@futurebird @icastico "Um. I'm just sincerely confused ... why we are discussing it so much?"IMO that's the point. It's not supposed to make sense because he's literally an engagement bot. His captive audience will perceive his remarks as meaningful a priori, since it's natural for humans to look for meanings in things, but in practice he's the figurehead of a literal, memetically mediated, AI takeover.

@futurebird The Emperor Has No Clothes. He surrounds himself with sycophants who tell him everything he says is is clever or witty and laugh at his jokes. It doesn't matter what he nonsense he babbles. It's a quick way to tell who belongs to the "right crowd". If you laugh at his so called jokes you belong. If you don't you're an outsider to be the target of future jokes and abuse.

@futurebird @icastico Because he misunderstands what it means to “seek asylum” he associated refugees with Silence of the Lambs. And he made a standup bit out of it, and got applause, and so it’s now a 2024 heavy rotation bit, in which refugees will eat you. Which tbh is not far off from the general tendency to equate immigrants to animals.
