What kind of bug is this? It randomly appeared on a screen door in southeastern Massachusetts at night, and is quite large (around the size of a thumbnail). My brain is saying "giant ladybug", but I've never seen a giant ladybug before.(@futurebird, it's not an ant, but have you seen a bug like this?)#bug #insect #beetle

@kechpaja Nice photo. I don't know much about beetles, but ladybirds are beetles and so this this individual. I think it could be Pelidnota punctata a spotted "June Beetle" they do eat plants, but don't do much damage and are not considered pests. Neat find!

@futurebird @kechpaja Spotted June beetle was my first thought, too, but I'm an amateur at best.

@mivox @kechpaja @futurebird Maybe it just took longer for the New Mexico ladybugs to show the effects radiation from the Trinity atomic bomb test.

@mivox @kechpaja @futurebird Do they bite? And if they do bite you, do you get ladybug powers?

@Probertd8 @kechpaja This is such a hilarious and wild accusation to make for a poor little June bugALL the problems. We found it, ya'll. The bug who is responsible for everything.

@futurebird @dougiec3 @mivox @kechpaja I was under the impression that invasive Asian Ladybeetles bit and native Ladybugs do not.

@kechpaja @futurebird try to look at its antenae, then you will see a big difference with ladybird beetles. they are in the family coccinelidae, this one is in the family scarabidaehere's a pic of the antenae with a club that opens to 3 leaveshttps://inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/45831/large.jpgand a ladybug with a simple wee club at the end of its anteaehttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/77/Coccinella-septempunctata-15-fws.jpg/1200px-Coccinella-septempunctata-15-fws.jpg

@kechpaja @futurebird Couldn't see that anyone had given you an answer. I checked my Audubon Field Guide and found a picture that looks just the same. It's a Grapevine Beetle - 3/4" - 1"They live in thickets, vineyards, and weeds in eastern half of US. Apparently, are more common on wild grapes and are not considered a major vineyard pest.

@anabana @kechpaja It's odd you can't see the other replies, there are about 10?But this is the same thing that I thought, though this is a new common name I didn't know about.

@futurebird @anabana That is unfortunately common. Replies to a post don't always make it to all instances that the post has made it to, and so far there is no way to fetch them. The best you can do is to open the original post in a separate tab (click on the three dots and click "open original post"); that will have all replies.

@Nmyownworld @futurebird @kechpaja oh, interesting! The ones we see where I live are shiny green-and-gold. They're currently active, which means buzzing about low and slow across the yard and occasionally slamming head first into walls and windows (they seem to recover from this fine). They're very pretty, but not the most graceful things 😅https://bugguide.net/node/view/658203
