just remember everyone, we'll still be talking about this Crowdstrike incident a decade from now just like the left-pad incident. nothing ever changes because the tech industry is fundamentally broken and worthless on every level.

@nyx The good news is that in two decades nothing computer relevant will be touched by humans anymore

@mia "A fire broke out backstage in a theatre. The clown came out to warn the public; they thought it was a joke and applauded. He repeated it; the acclaim was even greater. I think that's just how the world will come to an end: to general applause from wits who believe it's a joke."

@ridiche almost every piece of computing infrastructure that is critical to the functioning of our civilization -- hospitals, government stuff, banks, basically all Fortune 500s -- runs on Windows, other than some exceptional cases like old mainframes that can't be replaced because literally no one knows how to program them anymore.

@nyx @ridiche The old servers nobody can program are being replaced by windows servers. Source: I'm one of the idiots doing it.

@nyx It's so sad how much potential to free us from drudgery and enable expression computers have and instead we employ them almost exclusively for box-checking bullshit.

@nyx @ridiche I feel like those ancient mainframes are the last time business had software that just werked and we've just been layering increasingly leaky abstraction on top of one another ever since. Learning COBOL to get them working again is the future of tech.

@meltedbrain_y2k @ridiche I've considered this before but the problem is most COBOL mainframes in production have a whole lot more going on that you need to know about besides just knowing COBOL. like there are all these other subsystems that you only learn by having access to themor so I've heard
