While listening to music from the 70s, I had an interesting thought, why is it that it seems like they don't make good music anymore? Is it true, are people like Janis Joplin, Jimmie Hendrix, and Eric Clapton just don't exist anymore?Or maybe there's a LOT of good music now, but because of the internet, there's so much music out there so it's hard for anyone to really go big anymore.Or maybe I'm just bring nostalgic and really nothing has changed (I really don't think so). What do you think?

@cjd It's a matter of risk-reward and record companies prefering to cultivate images and personalities rather than allow for self-expression. The pressure was there before, to be sure, but now it's cradle to grave control.

@cjd people who put SOVL into music still exist, they're just harder to find than a single, not mentally ill girl on the internet, also the artists you brought up as examples are primarily rock artists, easy to forget that the artist doesn't have to be doing rock and roll to be goodon an off note, i like red vox

@cjd The three musicians you named are all ugly. Think about that long and hard. Video killed the radio star and it's been a regression downhill ever since. Music is a lot like architecture and art. It's a reflection of the culture. Technology has influenced music so we end up with things like autotuned pop hits appealing to the masses because the masses have their faces stuck in beep boops all day long. There are still some good artists out there playing real music with real instruments, you just have to search for them. There's not many, but they're out there. You like Clapton? You'll like this kid https://youtu.be/q3r573S1gQw

It occurs to me that the pre-internet era was conducive to music as an industry, and the post-internet era is not.Back then, you'd hear a song on the radio (ad funded) and you could go buy the record and then you could listen to it whenever you wanted, and you could go to the concert. Now, you hear a song online, there's no funding for that anymore because it's race to the bottom. You COULD buy the record, but you won't because you can download it - or just stream it whenever you want. The modern era is conducive to Youtubers because they make new videos every week, and you need to see the new episode, so they can try to show you some ads.Just one album that you can just download and have whenever you want is just not a business model.TL;DR Internet Killed The Radio Star.

How does the eras tour earning over a billion dollars fit into this narrative? It seems like a negation on first blush, but I suspect you have already considered it.

I'm not sure I follow, do you mean musicians in the internet era touring and making over a billion on concert tickets?

Taylor Swift's recent tour was named 'Eras', I was specifically referring to that one tour.

Ok I see, so the thing is Swift is actually not that good. So why is she making all that money? Most probably:1. Marketing2. Corporate events (taking employees to the shows)3. Outright money launderingBut then WHY is she making all that money?Well, if you look at her politics, you can see she's very pro-establishment - absurdly pro-establishment for a musician. So I would say it's quite likely that she's somebody's kid and there's a money funneling operation going on. It's a bit like how Hollywood makes $50mn on a $10mn movie and they say the movie lost money. What's clear to me is they're not out scouting for good musicians and signing them up anymore. That era is over.
