Journalists who remain on Twitter at this point will be remembered for their capitulation to the forces that are working to end democracy, and by extension freedom of expression. https://mashable.com/article/elon-musk-x-twitter-pro-trump-custom-hashtag-icon

@dangillmor Why can journalists realize they are one of the major forces that keeps other people over there? If you need to observe what's going on make a non-identified account forget about follower count and just take screenshots and post them in your paper, on here and elsewhere. You don't need to add your voice and intelligence and value to the conversation there (and become a part of the attraction) to report on what is happening.

@futurebird @dangillmor Yup, tragically, on Twitter or not, what Dan says applies to a lot of "journalists" today.[Dr Evil Airquotes GIF]

@dangillmor I use Threads, Mastodon, Bluesky, LinkedIn and X-Twitter for my astronomy posts.Sadly I still get the biggest response on X-Twitter. Mastodon has been slowly rising but is still far behind. Why I can only speculate.

@kevinjardine @dangillmor Respectfully, you should follow a lot more people if you want to get a big response. If you are a journalist at least like 1000 people. The authentic engagement you will get here will blow everything else out of the water. But you do need to keep adding people and growing your account in a way that we have seem to have forgotten about in all those years in those walled gardens.

@futurebird I recently followed many more people after interactions on a post of mine (still not close to 1000). Now I don't have nearly enough time to keep up with the content in my feed.I've loved being able to see everything from the people that I follow. Should I just give that up? Do you worry about missing important posts from people you enjoy engaging with?

@OffTheBooks I think everyone misses some posts, the really neat stuff has a way of coming back.

@futurebird @kevinjardine @dangillmor Also, in case you didn't know already, use hashtags and/or make sure that full text search is turned on for your posts. The latter is in the web app at Preferences> Public profile> Privacy and reach tab> Include public posts in search results. It's off by default, for privacy.

@futurebird @OffTheBooks I personally am trying to keep my timeline down to manageable size (meaning that I can mostly catch up with it in reasonable time). I don't like the idea of missing some posts from the people I follow, so I carefully choose who to follow.I don't know if there are a lot of people with the same approach.

@futurebird @kevinjardine @dangillmor not that the dot social guys could see this, but some of us can see a "i'm trying to get more engagement" follow request from a mile away and will hit that X without waiting to see... it's generally preferred to have at least one meaningful interaction (with *what that person posts*, not just them faving your post) before the frq

@apophis Oh. I just assumed that people follow people after maybe boosting a few of their posts, or having a nice conversation or something like that.

@apophis @OffTheBooks This. And also it's key to boost good replies to anything you post. Otherwise no one will see the reply.

@OffTheBooks @futurebird Mastodon has a few tools to help with that. You can put people in lists, and enable removing their posts from your timeline to enjoy when you want to dip in.You can hit the bell on a profile page and you'll get a notification for every post. And you can mute an account with a time limit, If they're hitting your timeline too much right now due to some event.

@FediTips @dangillmor Yes, of course I know about these accounts and follow many professional astronomers using my other astronomy account, https://mastodon.social/@galaxy_map
