Republicans have no ideas for who they want to help or what they want to make. They just want to get rid of people. People holding the signs must know this, but some "moderates" might not have put together that "mass deportation" is always mass violence. It means creating camps, patrols, papers to show when they say "papers please" You thought COVID rules were bad? Baby stuff. You want to sort all humans by where they were born! Into bins and boxcars. It's ugly.

I just don't want anyone to have any illusions that this isn't anything but a call dislocate people and put them in camps. Why camps? You can't "just send them back where they came from" they may not have a claim to citizenship anywhere else. They may not know the language or culture. They may not want to go because they live here. So you will need massive camps. And if you think I will be helpful I will not. I will become a huge problem. Lots of people will.

@mawhrin Once they start running the trains (or cargo planes) they don't stop running them. And it's just so easy to add more people to the list, if you have a bin to sort people you don't want into. Some may end up in the prison system doing the same labor they did before. Speed running back to slavery and feudalism.

@futurebird how far is it from "we're taking them to send them away" to "no one will notice if we just don't feed them in Alaska or federal lands in Nevada" once someone's worth so little you just want to be rid of them, the steps are so short

@beans_please It's not very far at all. And there are a segment of people who don't care. Who want that. They just want a nice white nation without any "languages" or "religions."But, I think there are also people who may be a little bigoted but don't fully see what this is. These are the ones who are like "well they should follow the law" not recognizing that laws don't exist if you don't enforce them. If you base your whole economy on not enforcing them.

@beans_please People have a right to go on living in their homes because they have been living in those homes for decades. If we can suddenly switch the rules like this it could be anyone whose next. And of course it's just ... wrong.

@futurebird @beans_please Also those slightly bigoted people who do not want their lives inconvenienced and do not realize that there will be nobody to do all sorts of invisible jobs that make their lives possible if such a deportation were to happen. Even if they do not care about the people themselves the economy would collapse and it would affect them.

@futurebird Those people holding up those placards are doing so because they think that they will always be on the right side of the "papers, please" conversation. They cannot countenance the thought that they would or even could ever be on the deportation end of that conversation.Imagine their surprise when their papers are suddenly not "good", and that day is coming sooner than they think. But of course, it will be too late because as you said elsewhere in this thread, one the trains/planes start running, they don't stop.Nobody ever wants to believe that they're already on the slippery slope. Denial is a helluva thing.

We aren't talking about "immigration policy" this is about persecuting Americans who aren't citizens. Now if you are confused why there are so many Americans who aren't citizens, that's been by design. But it's also happened before in our history. It's always a bad sign when a country has a bunch of people who live there, work there, who are part of what makes that country what it is but they aren't equals. It would be wise to stop doing this.

@futurebird They will persecute Americans who are citizens not just those who are not.By appearance or name and toss their ID and claim that they have no proof of citizenship. No due process and no recourse. It happened during Trump's first term at a smaller scale. Also "...suggest mass deportations of legal immigrants who arrived after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act...That’s the current into which Vance was playing."https://talkingpointsmemo.com/live-blog/professional-wrestling-rnc-style-this-time-its-trump?entry=1495905

@futurebird Some of it, I fear, is some universal human impulse to say "make these bad things happen to other people, just spare me and my family". I want to be wrong about this, I would be incredibly happy to be wrong about this.

@futurebird @beans_please There is also a significant contingent who don't realize that following the law isn't the point. A Black person may follow the law in every way and still be murdered by white cops because they had a bad day, with zero consequences.

@LenaLia Why do they people who think there were "microchips in the vaccines" not understand that there is no way to do this without putting every single person in a database and making all kinds national IDs and check points?I guess they assume it won't apply to white people?Good luck with that one.

@EverydayMoggie @LenaLia There is a big difference between digital privacy and the government keeping a list of citizens. We do not have such a list in the US. Many countries do and might even find it kind of wild that there isn't a list. This isn't a privacy issue, it's a question about who is and isn't valid. Any changes have massive implications. I'm also concerned about digital privacy, but it's not the same issue.

@EverydayMoggie @LenaLia I mean, functionally, there are lists, and ways to find out who people are. So maybe the pretense of not keeping a list is just a pretense. But there are a lot of people who do not have a birth certificate or a passport and who cannot prove they are citizens. (Though birth certificates can be re-ordered)We use driver's licenses for everything which is a total joke.

I'm not so sure they don't. I remember a friend telling me about crossing the US-Mexico border and being questioned by border control. They knew facts about his life that even he barely remembered -- relatives, addressed he'd lived at in childhood, all sorts of things.@futurebird @LenaLia

Birth certificates are very weird. My original one was destroyed and I had to order a replacement from a state I hadn't lived in for many years. They never asked for even one shred of proof that I was actually the person named on the birth certificate.@futurebird @LenaLia

@futurebird this is a thing I just massively do not see why people can't get. Of course they're talking about camps. There's not some country out there that's like "yeah, we want the people you're genociding." It barely happens in Europe, and even then there's a lot of backlash, and that's also racist af. Deportation of people born here means massive killing. That's all it means.

@futurebird "I just don't want [...] here" can sound so reasonable to people uttering it, it's just a matter of leaving, no big deal /swhat is frightening is that there is already proof that people who are saying it are aware that enforcement requires violence and are fine with that
