Zoom calls suck but to get 5 years in prison for attending one is absurd.https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jul/18/five-just-stop-oil-supporters-jailed-over-protest-that-blocked-m25

@davidho 5 years is harsh, but that's long enough for them to learn how to do the math of the energy contained in 1 cubic mile of oil and all the important uses of byproducts such as natural gas that currently cannot be replaced if we "just stop oil"

@feld @davidho what good is that if the heat is unbearable and we keep getting flooded and our homes wiped out by hurricanes. come on down to Louisiana, oil country

@delric I don't have a solution for you. The estimated cost of replacing all use of oil and oil byproducts was over 120 trillion dollars last I checked; more than the entire world's GDP. And that was before the recent inflation was taken into account.

@feld @davidho There is more than enough sun, wind and wave (sea turbines, among other options) energy (in effect, all indirect uses of either radiative energy or gravitational energy) around to provide the power required both for low-latency uses (let's say same day with thermal storage) and high-latency uses with chemical storage. What there isn't enough of is harnessing that energy. Many of those byproducts can be dispensed with and those which are absolutely critical can be handled by national reserves while serious effort and resources are injected in the research and development of alternatives.

@lispi314 do you have any idea how much energy we'd need to make the byproducts of natural gas like synthetic oils? And then at the scale we need them because we don't know of anything else with the same performance characteristics? There are so many things like that people don't think of. The list is very long.
