Redditors once again in the wrong re: financesI don't actually recommend combining finances until marriage, when you legally become a combined entity, and even then I'm not sure about it outside of making tax time a little simpler. I find the ideal to be separate savings and checking accounts so that each person can just manage their money independently as they see fit, and split/pay bills upon an agreed division. Putting all your money in the same accounts dilutes each person's contribution and makes it real hard to track individual spending, and now you have to do the relationship equivalent of turning two keys in a nuclear silo for large purchases. It's a friction point that need not exist. If you want to make things easier around shared expenses, set up a joint checking account but keep the existing accounts intact, and contribute into it an agreed upon amount each month as a recurring draft from each personal checking account to keep it funded. If you have long term shared goals like buying a house, set up a shared savings account as well and use it for that purpose. Then repoint all shared expenses to this checking account. That way each person can enjoy their leftover money as they see fit, independently.

@7666 Three accounts: mine, theirs, and joint. Bills come out of joint, and both contribute to it monthly in proportion to the ability (revenue) of each.

@apicultor Does this mean you lack savings accounts in tandem with each?

@7666 You seem to be assuming only one of each. ;)I have edited my post to make that clear.
