No working screen reader for nine years* but, hey, you folks want some AI with that?Let Fedora know what you think in their survey to add generative AI to the operating system:https://fedoraproject.limequery.com/142117?lang=en#AI #LLM #GenerativeAI #Fedora #a11y #priorities* https://ar.al/2024/06/23/fedora-has-been-shipping-with-a-broken-screen-reader-for-nine-years-but-the-real-problem-is-me/ https://fedi.jaenis.ch/@andre/statuses/01J324KTD59W35MWBCKSC6YM6N

@aralThe whole thing: insult to an injury. But why ask if English is your primary language? What next? Asking if your primary skin color is melanin-deprieved enough?

@aral If it's local and useful like transcription of speech app or desktop wide, then why not. Anything connected to big cloud Ai corporations with fetching of data online, then hell no.

@aral …why does an OS where you can pipe from place to place easily require OS-level integration for calling an API? Like what‘s the actual engineering problem here that third-party software couldn‘t solve incredibly easy?

@vger Donno, maybe they discount non-English replies as “didn’t understand the question.” :) Less cynically, they might have an internal debate about whether it’s worth issuing surveys in multiple languages and they’re gathering data to make a decision (because, goodness forbid, we make those decisions on what would be the right thing to do instead of what a number tells us to do).

@esoteric_programmer They’re just putting their feelers out but, yes, it’ll either be local models (not necessarily bad, e.g., local machine translation) or API (ChatGPT, etc.) Fedora won’t include non-free software. Not for any ideological reason; IBM doesn’t want the liability. So for the same reason Firefox can’t play videos on Fedora.

       > "Hey, maybe the AI can fix the screen reader…"@aral of course. Just take a screenshot of the whole screen, send it to an online service to do optical character recognition and run text-to-speech, send the audio back to the client, just like Microsoft Recall.

@aral @rejzor It is working for me on wayland and I'm on arch. I had to patch it myself and it's still scary how flaky it is. Sadly, the issue is an infinite loop which I imagine would be hard to debug for a blind user while managing two screen readers at the same time.
