my roommate has been alerted to an AIX Sysadmin job in our area. I don't think it should be legal to admin a system a decade older than you. If anything, it should be adminning YOU

@foone unfortunately that stipulation comes with a slight hiccup in that almost everyone who worked on that stuff at deployment time is now either retired or dead.I once had a conversation about this with the head of security at a UK bank, who described the problem as "existential". at the time they had precisely two AIX admins, both of whom were in their 70s and stayed around mostly because they were attached to the machines, and no useful contingency plan beyond that.

@Xavier oh, I know! I used to work a company that had to certify our product worked on banks, because y'all are still using it.But no, AIX is outdated. I also run MS-DOS and Windows 95 daily, that doesn't make it outdated. It makes me a weirdo. You banks? You're all weirdos.

@Xavier yeah, this isn't helping your argument. non-weird businesses don't have mainframes anymore :)

@foone I work as a software developer (medical sector). When I started working there, five years ago, the software exclusively ran on AIX. The first thing I did was port the software to Linux, which was awful and took forever because AIX is awful. Finally getting our customers off of AIX might easily take 15 years. System administration is just painful, everything feels stuck in the 90s. I hate AIX so, so much.
