The reasons why some people rather pick a dictator in the US are just insane.. :amaze: Things like "yeah but inflation has gone up" and "cars are more expensive now"REALLY?! You rather live under a dictatorship instead of paying a little more.. While it's even the question if that's the caseTrump and the MAGA bs are a cult of fascist, nothing more, nothing less

@stux Well there were people in the West, claiming Gaddafi was a very good guy, because gas prices were low in Libya...

@stux "But but but he is making America Great Again.". SHUT.America never has been Great. Yes, maybe in size (and size of people), but not in actually good metrics.

@stux Also the inflation was mostly caused by Trump policies. He pursued expansionary fiscal and monetary policy during a strong economy, ignoring warnings that this would limit our ability to deal with a crisis, and stripped resources away from pandemic prevention. It took some time, but Biden was able to tame the inflation that Trump caused, and now the US is doing significantly better than the rest of the world.

@stux Mussolini campaigned on getting the trains to run on schedule. (He didn't and they didn't of course.)Historically it seems that it takes shockingly little for people to support a dictator.

@stux society has slowly eroded away our humanity. we are a society of "I got mine, you worry about yours". where any kindness is seen as a weakness.where systems that used to work, don't anymore because funding was cut because the person who cut it saw it as competition.most people don't even realize that those causing the erosion, those responsible for the reason they are feeling in dire circumstances are the ones they are now supporting.

@stux they believe that they won't be who sacrifices.Americans don't know war on their local land. The last time we had to deal with that was far before anyone remembers. For the majority who are calling for a conflict, for thinking this election is minor, etc. I believe they feel as if "worst case scenario" some nebulous destruction will happen in some desert somewhere to determine who won and then we will have a press conference outlining when new changes will take effect. They don't seem to truly understand that this conflict invites world participation. Why would a 3rd party NOT take advantage of an America in Civil War? Why wouldn't individuals take advantage of overtaxed infrastructure?Their privileges, situations, or whatever might prevent them from being conscripted but it can't prevent their neighbors from simply robbing or violating them.

@stux It's batshit. I understand that ~10-15% of people will always vote for the fascist. And I understand that their vote share can increase to ~30% when tims are hard. Which when you factor in 3rd parties or other factors, can be enough to get them into power. But times in the US are not hard. Not really. And it looks like ~50% of them are about to vote for an openly fascist cult of personality. Despite the fact that last time, only a few years ago, was a *disaster*.I don't get it.

@stux, shaming people is one way about it, but it's not going to change anything. (Not saying you're shaming, but it often evolves in this direction.)I've observed similar sentiments in Poland (there was a right-wing government for 8 years due to that), and talking to people like that achieved nothing. And many tried. I think it would be better to find a strategy for that, and it's disappointing that other political groups are so bad at it. But nobody said that governing people was easy.

@stux not to mention car companies have withdrawn their lower priced models in favour of more profitable ones driving prices up on new cards, and shrinking the pool of affordable used cars in the process. greedflation disquised as "inflation"

@stux It's like they're always in "now" with no memory of the past. (A new car in 1971 was $2K for a Corona. But it was much less complex than a current car.)

@stux I am not going to vote for either of the two. Neither stands for policies I agree with anyways. But on top, I reject the choice between a wannabe king who is unsuitable due his character and a mentally incapable puppet managed by an unelected bunch of advisors and family. Both choices represent a constitutional crisis. And this is a direct result of the Democrats and Republicans usurping the Primaries process to elect candidates.

@stux I've been finding out more and more that there are two camps in maga lifestyle. One is "Everyone is wrong and I'M the only correct person and I want to be a Cheeto too."The second camp is a bunch a fearful cultists who believe the world is just another one of their hells and want someone big and loud to kill all the people they perceive as "bad"Religious brainrot and toxic levels of individualism powers this crazy train!

@stux Inflation has gone down. It went down more than economists expected. People who say it's about price of anything are lying. It's because they're stupid, lazy, hateful racists. It's never about gas prices or economics.

@stux So many far-right a-holes were basically inactive for a couple of decades. Then some progressive thing happened that enraged them so very much. Like maybe a black man serving as president or too many immigrants crossing borders. Then the a-holes activated and began coordinating:https://www.vox.com/politics/361136/far-right-authoritarianism-germany-reactionary-spirit

@stux A lot of US voters just don't believe in reality. Not just those on the right, but fantasy denialists across the spectrum. I have friends in this camp - closing their ears, don't want to hear it, "can't vote for Biden" (WTF), etc. I can only hope they come to their senses over the next few months. We're not selecting marriage partners at the ballot box. There's no moral purity to be had whether they sit it out or cast their vote. It's pragmatic and everything is at stake.
