Why do we have grass lawns?Lawns aren’t natural. Why do so many Americans have them?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR5kIPwg6_Q

@stux I almost have my wife ready to go with xeriscaping. She's very attached to a green lawn. I want butterflies and bees. I get to play with our small rear garden for now.

@stux I was told it was to keep critters from being too near the house... snakes and rodents and the like.

@stux Some HOAs require them. That could be its own series of videos on its own.

@stux Part of the reason is safety. You kept the area around your house cleared to keep the snakes away and to make them visible when they were close to the house. I lived on a piece of land with copperheads. I actually sat down next to one on my front porch stairs once. It was tiny baby sunning itself on the warm brick. I got up very quickly.Of course, what we have turned those cleared spaces into is a bit ridiculous now.

@stux Not American, but the main reason I have (and have wanted) a lawn is so my kids have somewhere to run around and play that’s safe and (literally) close to home.

@stux Status mostly. Poor people needed the space for gardens. Not needing to use that space for a garden meant you had enough money not to need to grow your own food. Snakes... I don't buy it, grass hides snakes well enough even when cut short.Clear space for a firebreak is another good reason, but usually you just cut down the brush and shrubbery and don't plant yet more vegetation that can burn and needs cut regularly.

@stux We've gone lawnlless and we don't miss it. Our yard is now full of pollinator friendly plants. It's fun to see all of the activity as the bees, butterflies, moths and now praying manti move among the flowers & foliage. There are many birds also feeding off the new envionment.

@stux I’m struggling with a sick lawn now. One of the biggest issues I’m experiencing is erosion. Without roots to hold the soil, it just washes away. Other advantages are keeping pests and fires away from the house. There are alternatives to turf grass but they tend not to be as durable to walk on. Xeriscaping is an alternative but places where that’s popular don’t typically deal with as much rain. Curious what solutions people use where lawns are not common because I’d love something else.

@stux knowledge really is a burden. The more I learn about this simple everyday thing called 'lawn' the more I realise it's actually evil.

@stux 1/2 I understand what the video is getting at, and I don't disagree with that sentiment. However, it is factually inaccurate when the narrator says that the plant (grass I'm assuming) isn't native to North America. There are indeed grasses native to North America. I grew up in the Midwest, specifically the Great Plains region, where a lot of native grassland has been turned into farmland.

@stux Lawns are stupid. I only have one 'cos the house came with it, and the city threatens to cite me if I let it grow wild.

@stux grass in a lot of cases can be way simpler to maintain than a lot of other things. Do they need to be perfect and weed free.. no. But I personally spend a lot of time playing and hanging out with family in our yard.Having a relatively flat open soft natural area is pretty handy.
