Redoing my retirement spreadsheet to account for the extra cost of air conditioning. This is like living down south. I have the AC on every single day!I hate turning it on. It uses so much power, but Pica is very old and so am I and the heat makes us sick.

It's just 36C all day long until the sun sets. This is horrible. And NYC isn't being hit hard compared to most places. It's just always hot.

I used to count how many days I turned on the AC in the summer. I was very proud to keep it under 15. Now I don't count anymore.

@futurebird When I moved away from NYC I was in a 9th floor apartment with brick surface facing west and my bedroom got sooo hot. I'd consider running AC (in bedroom only) only on nights when it wasn't going to get below 80. It was getting alarming how many nights there were, and that was nearly a decade ago, but I never thought to count. The brick would hold heat even when there was a cooler breeze outside

@futurebird As a Sydneysider I feel this. That is a pretty hot day for even in Sydney summer. It should not be regularly that hot in New York.

@futurebird We've run the AC a lot longer and more often than any other year we've lived here in Queens. A new mechanical vent installed on the roof last fall gave us some hope that we wouldn't need the AC as much, but this summer has been harsh.

@futurebird I grew up in Utah. As a kid we had a swamp cooler to cook the back of our house but it didn't do much for my bedroom. My first apartment was on the 2nd story and didn't have air conditioning. Even that was doable 20 years ago. Now I'm in Texas (not for much longer) and I have to run air constantly from May to October. My electric bill goes up 5x half the year.

@futurebird Sleeping with air temp over 26C is a strain.Over 35C is like trying to get hurt. It's definitely not purely a luxury thing, unless health and life count as luxury items.

@futurebird same in Chicago: every summer is hot, humid, and miserable. I hated every minute of being outdoors. I try to explain this to people in Scotland (where it never gets hot) and they are dumbstruck 😂

@futurebird it's strange, if I'm outside with a task to do, I am ok with 6 or so hours of 36C heat, but if I'm inside trying to read, it will make me miserable in about a half an hour.

@devxvda @futurebird I’m curious what these modes mean (I do this too sometimes) considering the core mechanisms of an air conditioner and dehumidifier are identical.

@danblondell @devxvda @futurebird AIUI: the initial energy (in kJ) to dehumidify a room is not enormously much less than to dehumidify and cool down the room. But the power (in kW) to maintain that situation is far less. Because heat comes through walls and windows and ventilation air flow, if the inside is cold. While water vapour transport only happens through ventilation, not the other mechanisms. So AC dry mode is basically running the AC very slow but fairly cold internally

@Zamfr @danblondell @devxvda We have dehumidifiers which help to make the AC feel a bit better, they are their own appliance and let you feel OK at about a degree or two higher.

@futurebird @danblondell At the other end of the scale, this is an advantage of mercury thermometers, which never go below −39°C (−38°F)

@futurebird We live in an old house in the San Francisco Bay Area. Every year I wheel out our portable AC and maybe we run it for a day or two before I pack it away again in October. I think I've run it more this month than in the past decade.

@futurebird In this global warming world, AC is not a luxury. It’s life support. The 1300 people who died on one day during the Hajj this year proved that point.

@futurebird On the retirement thing: I am fairly sure that electeicity during the daytime, in summer, is going to be very cheap in the not-to-far future,

@Zamfr I want to put in a battery bank and panels for our building We have an excellent roof for it and it's easy to access. The panels would offer shade that could help our gardening efforts too since there is *too much* sun up here for growing many plants. I could really use some artificial partial shade.

@futurebird The battery might not even be needed? If you strongly cool the air during the day, you also cool the walls in the building, acting effectively as low cost "energy storage" as they help to cool the air once the sun is down and the airco is off.In that sense, AC is really well matched to PV.

@futurebird I hope the other tenants in your house are amenable to the idea. Having a communal roof garden seems like a positive indicator for that.I want to start something similar but getting consent if not cooperation from ~60 different owners/tenants terrifies me a bit.@Zamfr
