We were having a discussion on tumblr about what people consider "wealthy" people threw out all kinds of numbers and criteria. But I have a simple definition.A person is wealthy if they can afford full-time staff. That is, if you can pay the year-long salary for someone. That's "wealthy""obscene wealth" is if the number of staff is greater than two per member of your household. That's too much power over other people. (running a company isn't always the same thing, but it can be.)

Pica is wealthy- but she doesn’t pay us so IDK if it counts.

@futurebird No. She's not sharing the wealth, so it doesn't count.

@futurebird thanks for this metric. I like how flexible it is.

@futurebird I believe I saw once that Robert Reich defined wealth as not having to think/worry about purchasing things you needed when you needed them. I find that useful because it’s elastic and takes into consideration that someone who needs less can be “wealthy” without having X dollars.

@futurebird I always figure you don't count as wealthy or even well-off if you can't quit your job and go play for a year.If you have to show up or get wrecked, you're just working class.

@futurebird I can get behind this definition. Though I will continue to hold that “more than one house (residence)” also qualifies.

@setsly It depends on the purpose of the definition.

@pamela6591 This was the definition I started with, but I wanted to exclude people who need home aid help because they just can't do some chores. Normally, someone will come by and clean twice a week in such cases and that person isn't working full time for just one person.

@futurebird It would appear, then, there are no clear lines one can draw between the haves and the have nots. 🙂

@futurebird Most of my working life, I struggled to make ends meet. Rich people, to me: afford to eat out at least once a week; routinely afford fresh whole foods and meat; can vacation at least once a year; buy new clothes each year, sometimes several times a year; have more than two or three pairs of shoes that they can replace before they're falling apart; don't rely on home baking, arts and crafts, for Christmas gifts; never have to choose between paying bills or medical need; more such.

@futurebird that's what she says, but what if she lost it all on catnipcoin and can't admit the truth?
