@aral And "Refuse" is a better opposite to "Accept" than "Do not accept".

@aral I disagree in that “Maybe later” became so common it helps understand the specific nature of the dialog. “No” is more generic and could apply to many other system prompts, but seeing “Maybe later” makes it easy to click without worrying and reading the rest. Plus, a lot more characters means it’s easier to target.

@aral builders too... I can't count the number of times I've seen places - internet & in person alike- which say/claim to be fully disabled accessible & in fact have few to no accessibility features/aspects to them..... Because I don't believe anyone should "count" on this, if all they've got is a disabled sticker on a broken button for an electric door opener or in front a narrow parking spot 1/2 or more filled with potholes... Or online if they've just got a little note saying "call us with any accessibility needs you may have" on a site that can't load properly on smartphone - to the extent that not over 1/2 their phone number is even visible.🙃Far better to tell me "no", so I can move away faster without injury, especially as sometimes - in person - I don't need the accomodations - so telling me what you have, without ridiculous claims of "fully" may actually get me to your business... instead of just seeing a mess of a parking spot in person, which has me driving away without even trying to park ...

@aral "no" is already implicitly available: leave the site and do not return. But fuck em anyway, this "maybe later" language is infuriating.

@aral I see it unlikely that this trend emerged from the head of a developer. And I see it likely that in many "UX review" meetings there was some developer trying to question such pattern.

@aral Dear users, we developers are truly sorry but we're often not the ones who decide to implement obtuse or dark pattern features :(

@mwichary Maybe later helps us understand that the people who implement it have an abusers/manipulator’s understanding of consent.(Which is par for the course for Silicon Valley/Big Tech.)

@aral I can always express my point of view, but a "maybe later" button is not a hill I'm willing to die on at my job. Gotta pick your battles.

@KrajciTom Yes, well, basically this comes down to a basic understanding of consent. The traditional lack of which is exemplified by the joke itself and traditional patriarchal culture with all of its toxicity/misogyny/chauvinism that, sadly, so many of us ourselves were brought up in and must do our best to unlearn.
