2-hour long video of little ant explaining (in a tiny little ant voice) the advantages and disadvantages of different soil types when building tunnels in your nest. "Ok. Everyone likes clay, but there are many kinds of clay. Some clay will attract mosses and little springtails which you can eat sometimes, but other clay gives better traction when it's raining. It can be hard to decide what's best for your nest!"(For more art featuring these ants by poqu go here: https://www.tumblr.com/poqu/tagged/ants)

I had a little trouble reaching the artist to find out if I could include the image that inspired this deeply strange post. But now we have the whole thing in one place. This is the only TED talk I'm interested in attending.

@futurebird I don't know why, when I first passed me I read "soul types" but having looked at it, I don't think it's wrong either 😂

@futurebird I did wheel-thrown pottery for years, and I can guarantee the part about many types of clay is real.

"Now I must bring up the controversial subject of sand. Sand comes in many sizes and colors. It is essential for safe traction in vertical tunnels. But, every ant knows too much sand can lead to the dreaded 'tunnel sag.' This is where the principle of layered construction becomes important. Traction layers have been employed by some colonies, but I would advocate for blending a substrate with both traction and strength. By taking more time refining the blend you can save on maintenance!"

(You need to imagine this in a tiny little ant voice, with the hum of a projector in the background and the occasional click of the slide reel.)"OK, I've brought some samples. Don't be shy. Squeeze them in your mandibles. Our mandibles and antennae are how each ant can best judge the quality and composition of her soil. Get close to the soil. I even notice difference in not just texture and moisture, but also pheromones and other fragrances. Soil is a living thing!"*click* (next slide)

@futurebird I like that soil types triangle.
