You don't need to choose between an "outpouring of sympathy" (that will be spurned rudely) and weatherman cos play (that could put you on a watchlist) There ARE other options on offer. Really nothing would be more fitting than if people just lost interest in this quickly. There are lots of shootings in the US, aren't they just a fact of life we are all supposed to accept as the price of freedom?

I've watched my students close the blinds and lock the door of the classroom with efficiency and seriousness far too many times. (Since I have a bad leg they help me get down on the floor out of the sight lines from the window in the door.) And I hate that they have to do these drills. That we let violence shape our lives like this. But I'm told it's the price of freedom. OK. OK. I see.

@futurebird THANK YOU and I agree. That's what I'm trying to do with my posts - not "hug it all out" but also caution people about doing/saying things that will hurt themselves and the antifascist/anti-trump movement *and* boost the war narrative the trumpers want, just because they want to look hardof course I'll *still* probably get a few people blocking me thinking I've gone lib but I just want to keep people alive, not-incarcerated, not surveilled, etc

@futurebird no child should have to understand what 'hard corners' are.I have had a firsthand lockdown experience at my school once, where it wasn't even clear what was happening (the incident involving firearms was not on school grounds but nearby) and I gotta tell you all, no child should ever have to experience that. Full stop.

@mybarkingdogs I'm not mad at anyone for feeling scared, or angry or anything really. I don't think what people say matters as much as we think. What we know about each other and how we respond to each other matters more than what people exclaim when the world is manufacturing so much to be stressed about.

@randy There was a shoot on my campus once. Somehow they collected him before he fired any shots but I was in lockdown with my Calculus 3 students. They had a quiz so they were tucked in the corners looking at their flash cards. I also did not like that image very much. That was when I taught college still.

@futurebird I think the US has become desensitised to gun violence, as you said it is daily. Seems shooter drills are a regular event in schools, so the next generations are prepared.

@IslandUsurper The Weather Underground was a left leaning political group in the 70s and the most recent *significant* source of left-wing political violence in the US. Real left wing violence is kind of rare. Disorder? Yeah, but sit-in aren't violent.Some people are trying to sound ... IDK tough... or maybe they are just upset and saying things that might make the FBI investigate them for threatening a former president's life. Does that make sense?
