New research: for monitoring bee populations, collections of physical specimens record more than twice the biodiversity as iNaturalist photo documentation.#bees #collections #biodiversity #entomology https://academic.oup.com/aesa/article/117/4/220/7706383?login=true

@alexwild Because they don't hold still. Also iNaturalist needs to discourage people from posting only adult forms of moths and butterflies. Nobody posts the caterpillars nearly enough. I get that people like to take photos of and draw things with pretty wings that like to pose but come on. Show me the larvae!

@alexwild I didn't say anything about how there aren't enough ants. I wanted to point that out because it was hard.

@helianthropy @alexwild You can set a filter just to show larval forms and this helps a lot, but the number of species photographed is cut down to 1/4 since people just post so many adult butterflies and moths. The filters can be a little hard to find, I've struggled to explain to other people how to use them since the menus are contextual and the option isn't always there. Also, it would be nice if we could tag ants as "alate" or "worker" They look really different.

@marc_w @alexwild That last photo could be the new "hang in there!" office poster!
