The bigger problem is its speed is significantly less than a sukhoi. If it gets caught by on the sukhoi will be dancing around it and maneuvering won’t save it then. I can’t think of any reason they’d add SM as a requirement instead of making it a big fast stealth fighter if they didn’t intend for it to dogfight. Think of it like this: If they made it faster and bigger, it’d outrun anything that could out dogfight it, and it could carry more internally which is good for BVR and CAS. It’s a mutt by design and it’s hindered by its dual purpose.

It’s a slow stealth aircraft with good avionics and an internal bomb bay. That’s all you need for BVR. They clearly intended it to dogfight but they made it slow, probably because it’s too heavy for its size, but if they made it bigger it’d lose maneuverability, which is a priority for the design.Logically they want it dogfighting or expect it to dogfight.

It’s slower than it’s near peers. Its main BVR capabilities are the avionics and stealth. It’s designed like a dog fighter which everyone insists is a multirole BVR aircraft. It does have BVR capabilities but it is not optimized for BVR. Lockheed also tried to optimize it for close range encounters which is evident in its design and the other choices they made.
