VR details it's #CrossBorderRail plans. If they get government support, they could start daily or weekends only traffic on Oulu-Haaparanta with connections onward. Cc: @jon https://yle.fi/a/74-20098841

@suihkulokki @jon In theory some other company could do it, too? But will the single other company with rolling stock (old VR regional trains) have it renovated in time, and would they want to, given that their plan so far has been in the other end of the country?

@tml @jon Well without standardized rolling stock etc railway traffic remains a travesty of free market. The government will have to tender the subsidy but probably nobody else than VR can apply...

@suihkulokki @tml also no one can really get any rolling stock now, not least as Stadler's broad gauge plant in Belarus cannot currently produce anything…

@jon @suihkulokki @tml why not? you don't need a specialized plant for that

@pony @suihkulokki @tml Please tell me who currently will build you a broad gauge EMU, other than Škoda in Ostrava? Which - given the Latvian experience - might give you pause for concern…

@jon @suihkulokki @tml why do you think that's some weird magic nobody can do? same train manufacturers do custom bodies for the uk and nordics and they don't need a factory in belarus to do it, they could make tank-like oversized locomotives for amtrak in kassel, etc., they may to be transported on road partially, but so what?

@jon@gruene.social @pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz @suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com @tml@urbanists.social Staddler could, as they are making Lithuanian order in Poland.

@jon@gruene.social @pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz @suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com @tml@urbanists.social the only really annoying thing is the logistics, because you need to transport the EMU's over roads (and ships for Finland) instead of rail, but that's not a massive problem.The 8.5 cm bigger gap between the rails is a bypassable problem for a small scale production, and fully solvable for a larger scale one.

@jon @pony @tml Anyone can make a Finnish gauge variant of their EMU. Siemens is making Finnish gauge vectron for VR @pony @tml

@pony @suihkulokki @tml Sure, you *could*, but currently only Stadler and Škoda have broad gauge designs, and Stadler - if it cannot use the Belarus works - has a huge order backlog (also thinking further: Stadler is building broad gauge for Spain and Portugal too). But however you look at it: at least 3 years wait for a new EMU for Finland I reckon.

@jon@gruene.social @pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz @suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com @tml@urbanists.social I'm pretty sure Talgo also would have a broad gauge design? Maybe a bit outdated, but they did have contracts in post-soviet asia countries somewhat recently.

@jon@gruene.social @pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz @suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com @tml@urbanists.social Last order in 2019, so not that outdated I guess https://www.talgo.com/afrosiyob

@ignaloidas @pony @suihkulokki @tml Haaaaaaaaaa. Good luck with that! (see delays getting anything Talgo approved in DK and DE currently) Also Talgo design is mostly for long distance transport, not regional EMUs.

@jon@gruene.social @pony@blovice.bahnhof.cz @suihkulokki@society.oftrolls.com @tml@urbanists.social Talgo does have the Vittal design (that was originally made for Latvia and won, but Latvian purchasing procedures got funny), though none have been produced for regular usage, only prototypes.But yeah, getting Talgo ATM would take longer than Škoda or Staddler

@wanisbunes @pony @suihkulokki @tml Those were built in a joint venture in Russia though, so design wise, sure, but I doubt the works is available.
