So is the US going to always be one election away from fascism now? “Vote for us or it’s fascism” every four years feels less like democracy and more like a hostage situation. How do you reform a system where things have gotten this bad?#USPol #Trump #MEGA #Republicans #Democrats #TwoPartySystem #electoralReform #democracy #institutionalCorruption

@aral I don't know, but there is no revolutionary left in America to stand up to them really. I can point to bigger, better organized leftist groups in history: the communists of Weimar Germany, the Black Panther Party, the free territory of Makhnovia. Right now, liberals only have one solution and that's to vote. And leftists who oppose the vote, well, most of them don't have any alternative.

@aral you're right. But as we just experienced in France, first vote and then fight for a better democracy and debate only with democrats. I know it is weird and strange and yes some democrats (Democrats) will abuse of this situation but you know better than me the disaster to have again Trump in the White House. And if you have ideas on how to change that share it !

@aral - one thing I find confounding is how the Democrats seemingly don’t fight back, they appear (to me) always weaker. Is there no way they can stand up and fight back? It's like watching a high school bully film where the victim never has the courage to fight back.

@aral Sadly, I believe the answer to this question is going to be "yes" until it is enacted and only then does the majority of people go, "ohhhhhh, so THIS is what fascism actually looks like? Oh no, we don't want THAT!" and has to fight that much harder to undo the reality that their complacency and misunderstanding put them in. It's going to be messy. My general feeling has been that once all the people that had a personal experience of or connection to a previous instance of fascism die off, it all becomes academic to a majority of people and they forget why they should not want it. I really do think a lot of people think, "oh, it can't be THAT bad! We're not going to let it get to World War levels!" and there's nobody left to tell them what it was like in the early 1900's run-up to Hitler and Mussolini - we just have history books that do not tell the complete story.I believe that for a large part of the US population, they secretly harbor an attitude of "well, I'll believe it when I see it", which will be far, far too late to stop it once they actually see it in action and realize that oh, hey, they're not in the "in" group like they thought they were and oh wow, this is really BAD for ME.

@aral ballot casting has nothing to do with the continued & ever expanding problem of government merging with big corporations, as tasks that once were just govt are mostly outsourced to these "partnering" corporations. This being the most basic definition of fascism. These "partnerships" being boasted about by pretty much all politicians in office & running for them, hence I can't take any political entity now claiming to be "fighting fascism", especially with electoralism in the USA, seriously.

@aral No bloody idea. I hate it. It's obviously better to vote for not-fascism than to speed up the end of US democracy, but that doesn't feel like a solution, just kicking the can down the road for another few years even if we stave off disaster this time.

@aral if we had Proportional Representation for our House of Representatives, then things would not be so “you win, I lose” because with multiple representatives in a district many many more people will always have someone they elected and who represents them. See H.B. 7740: The Fair Representation Act for how this would work. #ProportionalRepresentation #rankedchoicevoting @fairvote
