I have this fantasy about the "ultimate writing environment" small town, the more boring the better. One Dollar General with limited hours, a little apartment above an abandon video rental just off the highway. A mysteriously slow internet connection. No car. Just walk over the bridge to go to the store every day or write. That said, I think this is a kind of mirage. The best place to write is ... now. Just before a job interview. On the bus. In the middle of the night when you can't sleep.

Do you have an imaginary "ultimate writing environment" ?Mine is based on the place where I spent my summers when I was in high school. It's the little town where my parents live now and with nothing better to do I just wrote all day. I think I'm better at telling stories now, though. But I never have poured out words at that rate again. Drips and drabs.

@futurebird With all the police procedurals I watch, sounds like a place bad things would happen to me. ;-)

@alienghic That kind of makes sense for her stories I could see how being in a bus might give you those kinds of ideas for settings and places... Hard to explain why but this makes total sense.

@futurebird Boredom is the most powerful creative force in the universe. It frees the mind. And the hands.

@obviousdwest Boredom is great... but the other one that works is having something MUCH more important you ought to be doing. It's like a tradition that I write a short story the day before grades are due. I always get the most awesome ideas. It's like a damn curse. Then I need to stay up late one night to do the grades. At this point I know full well what's happening and wish I could yell at my own brain for being like that.

@futurebird You mean the ideal programming environment, for telling stories about function and information? Clearly, a bespoke cyber mansion! Very big library!

@futurebird Mine is my dad's old office/garage space in the state highway department building in our town. Snowplows and patrol cars parked, a bunch of 1940s era office equipment and furniture, like what they now call a "battleship" desk and file cabinets you'd need a fork lift to move, a portable manual Olympia typewriter, clipboards, carbon paper... I can smell it now. Petrichor, engine oil and paper.

@futurebird Mine's not imaginary: One of the rocking chairs of the deep, shady porch of the St. Simon's Island (GA) public library. There are outlets, a view of the ocean, and almost always a breeze. https://gla.georgialibraries.org/st-simons-island-public-library-in-the-spotlight/

@futurebird Honestly my ideal environment for writing or doing anything creative really is my old elementary school or even middle school classroom. The sheer boredom I felt so deep into my core while I was in those rooms sparked the deepest creativity that I unfortunately haven't felt in a long time :(

@futurebird This sounds very much like the place where I wrote my book. It's not bad!- DG with weird hours- over bridge to store- apartment over a garage- slow internet for no reason- sleepy townI did have a car so maybe that was why it was imperfect. But I did finish the book.

@futurebird I always imagine a place like where I went on vacation but I never come back and just hang my shingle on the main drag
