If you want to understand your own privilege, ask yourself whether you see politics as a game or as survival. Where you land on that spectrum should give you a fairly good idea of how privileged you are.#politics #privilege

@aral Exactly. If it seems like something you can opt out of with no consequences for how you go about, look at & feel about your life, then contratulations, you're privileged. Also, I wish people would stop viewing "you're privileged" as an insult. I mean, you tell someone "You're lucky" it's almost universally accepted as something akin to a compliment & it basically just means the same.

@aral sorry, me again. I'm plenty privileged but politics is still a matter of survival since the overheating of the planet will come for everyone.

@aral I've got the benefit of being privileged to the level, that survival politics doesn't affect me (now/yet?). But, it's one that matters in the world. Some areas of politics are about survival, and past that, about well being not just survival, ... but some are an annoying game politics, distracting from what matters. I like to support survival matters in politics. But, I'm annoyed by game politics, because it distracts from what matters.

@aral The right-wing understands this concept very well. If you listen to any of them, they beat the drum that the left is out to murder them and their children constantly to keep that level of fear going with their constituents at all times.

@aral I agree. If you see whether Trump or Biden wins as a matter of survival, you are very privileged.

@aral I used to view it as a game pretty much, red vs blue, but as I have gotten older, and I have found out I have vulnerable people in my life (a gay uncle and a Trans Best friend) I have come to understand politics is more than just a game, that something seemingly as simple as an election can decide if certain people live or die

@aral I tend to think of politics as something you "participate in" if you are rich and "something that is done to you" if you are poor. It's a question of agency.

@aral For me, it's definitely not a game. It's not a matter of short-term _personal_ survival for me, but in the long term political problems will kill us all if allowed to fester. And I very much care about the long term.

@aral lol.. i met a British woman yesterday, and i asked her what she thought of thr results.. she told me she didnt pay attention to politics bc she didn't think any participation in politics made any difference in the long runall i could think was 'this woman has lived a life of total privilege'

@aral Survival: Disabled former caregiver. My group privilege is being able to vote at all, only since the 19th Amendment (1920).

@aral ask yourself if you see having a job as a game or survival. That gets you to the point. Politics is another matter. Framing it that way smacks of rhetorical gimmickry in support of a common ad hominem attack on people with political positions you don't like, rather than honest engagement

@aral I learned it was a privilege to vote when I was 20 and worked with 42-yr-old man who was so excited to vote for the first time. It was my first election and I was less than thrilled with options and was thinking of not voting. He had skied down a mountain under cover of dark, made it to Canada as a political refugee, became a citizen just in time for the federal election, and the look of pride and excitement on his face! I have never taken the privilege to vote for granted again.

@aral before admitting to myself that I was trans, I absolutely treated politics as a game. I would bait and debate and try to humiliate conservatives. It's not that my heart wasn't in the right place, but I didn't think I had skin in the game. Now that politics is about me, it's a lot less enjoyable. I'm a lot more angry and pessimistic. And I see cis people treating my rights as a game to win or lose, and I want to implore them to remember that this is about people, real people. Please try to be compassionate.

@aral whew! That was a fun way to find people to block! If you think climate change or class or being a different group that's also oppressed (such as women) has any effect whatsoever on your white privilege you do not deserve the time of day to be heard. If you've ever come away from an interaction with a cop, no matter how small, and you're still here, there are untold amounts of people who can't say the same. Take a breath and do something besides complain.

@aral you can be “privileged” in a way where it may not affect you directly, but acknowledge that it does seriously affect others… and fight for their rights. Something doesn’t have to severely affect you for you to be passionate about it and elicit change.

@aral Us privileged only THINK we can opt out. It’s a mater of survival for everyone now. Climate change at a minimum, but short term fascism is at our door. No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition or being shipped off to camps.
