@jeffowski I feel like this, in particular, shaped me for the worse, growing up. Regardless of what I did, or did not do I would always be punished; so I learned that punishment was a certainty, but enjoyment was not - so I figured that I had to take what I want, if I was going to ever have any chance of experiencing any real joy or pleasure to contrast against the consistent punishment.My parents weren't intentionally abusive, but didn't understand how to parent a neurodivergent kid

@jeffowski every so often i see this reappear in my timeline and i just cannot understand how those statements don't appear as encouragement. yes it's snarky but it is still a desire to see more of that behavior when read at face valueif you're not reading "why can't you do that all the time" as encouragement to produce more of that behavior or maybe even an attempt to understand why that behavior is not manifesting itself, there is something more at play here and the cure has nothing to do with nicer tone

@7666 @jeffowski its often read as a jab over previous improper behavior, which, in my experience at least, is closer to the way people seem to use the phrase. My perception of it comes from the responses obtained when the jabbed person protests - the response is more often "it was just a joke stop being so sensitive" rather than "we just wanted to encourage you". The call to not be sensitive suggests that the joke was at the expense of the jabbed person but that it wasn't intended seriously - i.e. a jab
