I think the UK results prove, if nothing else, that there is a substantial need for electoral reform, probably to Proportional Representation.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election/2024/uk/results

@ChrisWere yep. That vote to seat share is a joke. As much as I dislike Reform, substantially fewer seats than the Lib Dems on a higher share of the vote, and the same seats as the Greens on a higher share of the vote is not representative. Sadly I don’t expect a Labour government who won 60%+ of the seats on 34% seats d the votes to even care.

@paulthenerd I think it's possible but difficult. Starmer knows that Reform handed him this majority on a platter. Pressure from both the left and the right might convince him it's the best thing to stay in power for a second term.

@paulthenerd Like 80% of Labour membership is pro PR as well, so there'll be pressure from within his own party, if not from a substantial number of MPs.

@paulthenerd Maybe I'm naive, but I think now could be the time. Certainly wasn't going to happen under Sunak.

@StaceyAyodele Everyone votes for their local person with first-past-the-post. The party with the most MPs (if they have over 50% of them), forms the government, everyone else forms the opposition.Tactical voting in the UK is entirely dependant on your local race.So it's not so much one election, but rather 650 elections where the winning party selects their prime minister. That's the short version.
